Severin liked to keep himself occupied. Because when he didn't, he tended to think more about things he felt he shouldn't think about. For example, right now, when he was thinking about his attraction to Gwendolyn Havers.
Leonora was still alive. Catatonic, but alive. And he'd treated her as alive for a very long time despite the objections of others. He'd refused to date. To ship her off to a home. He talked to her, dressed her, took her places in the hopes that something, someday, would simulate her into coming back.
And now, what? Had it taken only seven days to become attracted to another woman? Even if she was gorgeous and compassionate and funny and intelligent. If he hadn't been injured, he'd be occupying himself. Although granted, he'd be spending much of his time with Gwen.
The biggest clue that he was attracted to her beyond her obvious beauty was that he wanted to protect her. Perhaps his need and want to protect others was a fault, a flaw that many women found annoying. But he wanted to be on his feet, protecting her from Ana and her anxieties.
But he wasn't. He was here. He was injured. He was thinking about Gwen, and feeling a little guilty about his lack of guilt.

"Oh, really? How many degrees do you have? Oh, wait, you're eight. You don't have degrees." he said smugly. Then, seeing that she was crying, he sighed to himself. "Are you crying? Because if you are, it's ok...it looks like you're crying, is all. Just...um...don't, ok?"

"How would you know anyways, you adults are all the same, you think you know everything... and you know nothing!"
"I do so know everything. Well, not everything, but most things." he said.

"Um, I don't suppose you've seen any sign of Jack lately, have you?"
"Like any good self-appointed leader, he flailed his arms and ran into the jungle like an escaped chimpanzee with learning difficulties." he said calmly. "Good riddance, I say. Could've turned into a dictatorship."

"Yeah. It's weird. Then again, when we get found, I could make a fortune by being the one to discover it." he said. "There's a cool thought..."

The Tiger Pit Location found in box G4 below: Each box is 3 miles by 3 miles. It takes an hour to walk 3 miles. But also keep in mind that hiking (like that really steep hill to get to higher ground) will take a heck of a lot longer and that if you're running (like from some jungle thing), that you'll get somewhere faster.

"Let's get going".
"Yes, let's." he said as they started to move in the direction of the beach. So someone had drowned. A death had occurred, at some point. Maybe while they were all arguing the night before. Or when he was talking and smiling with Gwen that very morning. But there was no point in thinking about it.

"It's Leia..."
"Hello, Leia, it's nice to meet you." he greeted.
"Do you know that you're bleeding?"
He looked curiously from her, to his knee, then to her again. "I had noticed, yes, but thank you."

"Come on buddy, let's get you to the good doctor".
"Thanks." he repeated, and looked over to the young blonde. "I'm sorry, I didn't get your name...?"

Severin with-held a sigh. He refused to be drawn into another argument with the increasingly paranoid, loud-mouthed, childish and self-righteous Ruby. Trying to make her see reason was just...a losing battle. She preferred to stay in her own world, and Severin was happy enough to leave her there.
Then, that thought was gone, and Gwen's hand was on his chest. For some reason, that was all he concentrated on, all he thought about, for a moment. Just her hand.
"Yes, actually. That's very kind of you to offer, James, I fear I'm doing more harm than good."
Again, Severin felt the slight pang of helplessness, having other people help him. Something he didn't like, although he knew he needed it, and he knew it was kind of James to offer. "Thank you, James." he acknowledged, extending his hand as best he could.

"His leg was injured, out there in the jungle. We were hoping Jack could take a look at it,"
"Yes, that would be very nice." he said, his injured leg trembling.

"Yes, hello." said Severin, smiling at the young couple and masking the rather severe pain he was in.

"You could do a whole series, like Van Gogh's sunflowers or Degas' ballerinas. Percy's Pacific Pastels -- I think it has a nice ring to it,"
He laughed a little, glancing down and then back at her. "I think maybe we'll take the 'Percy' part out." he replied. "Although there's only so many times you can draw a sunset..."

"Oh, it's quite all right. I'll stay with you." he said, keeping his little smile.

"And I did promise to change your bandages. So between that and the guilt trip, I think you're stuck with me, Darling."
"Oh." he said, and smiled dryly. "Poor me."

"Fair enough, it can wait till we get back to the beach. I'm guessing Ana will take a few minutes to rest, regroup, and be back on the trail again sraight away."
"Yes. She's...very determined." Then, out of curiosity and concern, he asked, "And you? Will you be joining her again?"

"did she say anything about where she and Walter were this morning?"
"I'm afraid I didn't ask." he said, trying his best to walk normally so as not to put any weight on Gwen. "If I did, I think I might have been met with a scowl and a short, non-committal phrase."

He looked to Ana curiously, and then looked back at Gwen. It would be preferable than walking with someone who was marching like a swat trooper. Then again, Gwen maybe didn't want to support a hunk of meat with a bag leg. "You think so?" he asked, secretly hoping Ana would push him off so he could walk with Gwen.

"I want to know what happened to him, but he could be anywhere on this island. Clearly it's too dangerous to go blindly wandering around out here."
"Clearly." he repeated, surpressing slight grunts of pain as they hobbled further towards the beach. "Very well. We don't tell those at the beach anything, and continue looking for him when we're more prepared."

Severin sighed with relief as Ana ordered the small child to the front, away from the others so she could no longer hear them or irritate them. Being able to avoid Ruby at the beach was growing to a better incentive then his injured leg. It was difficult to imagine anyone more presumptuous, un-aware or as paranoid as Ruby. Ignoring Ana for the most part and determined to always have the last word, he did his best to ignore her sudden onslaught against Gwen. Gwen, who'd been nothing but civil, kind and moral, was the villain in Ruby's mind. For no reason.
Now that she was up ahead, they could talk freely without danger of Ruby overhearing them and launching into another tirade. He looked to Ana. "What do we tell people? Just that he's still missing, or do we simply avoid the subject?"
