He groaned in pain. Still, not the worst pain he'd ever been in. He clenched his teeth, glancing down at the wound. Wait. What if there was more than one arrow?
He looked up at Gwen. "Are you all right?" he asked between pained breaths.

His eyes wandered downward, and saw the small wire beneath Gwen's foot. What had she said about traps?
"Gwen!" he yelled, moving forward quickly as he heard a series of snaps set off in the undergrowth. He leaped forward, pushing her out of the way just as a long, thing arrow cut through the air. He realized it was an arrow because he got a very good look at it when it ripped into his knee, sending a searing blaze of pain up his leg. Unable to keep his balance, he fell to the ground with a short yell of agony.

"If you can both just stop for one second-!" he said, walking quickly to keep up with the pair of them.

The sudden noise was recognizable and instilled more caution in him, but it seemed to fade away quickly, signaling it was moving farther away from them. He continued after Gwen and Ana. "Wait, don't move too far in." he warned.

Sev watched Gwen stumble forward as she pursued Ana. "Gwen, wait." he called, walking after her in powerful strides.

"You think i've got a grudge about Gwen keeping secrets? Maybe I do. And your right, I would have done exactly the same thing in her position. Hell, I'm certain i've already done it while we've been on this island. But other than that, you don't know a goddamn thing about me."
Severin folded his arms, waiting patiently for her to finish. "So, really...you have no reason to be angry at Gwen, since you've done the same thing that she did? Ana, since the crash, Gwen has set about being as productive as she can. You, on the other hand, have taken on the role of island police. You've attacked at least one person." he began, keeping his tone calm and almost passive. "And you're right, I don't know anything about you. Apart from that you seem determined to do everything you're own way, make your own decisions and refuse to let others help you. And you seem to like holding a grudge that even you acknowledge to be senseless."

"You wanted her to come with, for what? Do you like playing the shouder to cry on?"
"I came to prevent the pair of you from killing each other." he growled, advancing on Ana and staring her down. "And you, Ana, seem determined to hold a grudge forever for something you would have done yourself. Either way, I'm sick of hearing it."

"Ana!" snapped Sev suddenly and angrily. "You're not contributing!"

He looked at Gwen with an expression of sympathy. "Gwen..." he began softly. "It's not your fault. Someone did this, it has nothing to do with you."
Then, he paused, and suggested gently, "This isn't helping. I think we should turn back."

"No, we've come this far; we're not going back."
He approached her. "Well, what can we do?" he asked. Gwen would have to see it was the most logical course of action. Still, people rarely took the right course of action. They listened to their emotions.

"Well, I don't believe in luck. Which is why we shouldn't depend on it, which is what we're doing by marching into the jungle blindly." he pointed out, trying to be gentle. Then, he cautiously said, "Maybe it would be better in the long run to turn back."

"Well, then all we can do is keep walking." he replied calmly. "Unfortunately, there's no way to know if we're even going in the right direction. We could be going even farther away, there's no definite way to know."

"Well, we just keep walking then. Something's bound to turn up,"
"Not necessarily." he said, trying to be careful about implying their search was pointless. "Or maybe he's simply deeper in then we first thought."

"Have you found anything else?"
"No." he replied, sighing a little and standing. After too much searching, there was no real evidence to where Jake had disappeared off to. "I haven't found a thing. Perhaps I was mistaken."

"You think we were wrong to assume this island was uninhabited?"
"Maybe. Still, I think it's more likely someone back at camp has caused trouble. We do have a few unsavoury or suspicious characters." he said, looking around at both of them. He moved in the direction that Ana had pointed out, crouching slightly as he did and keeping his eyes peeled for any trace.

"I'd say our best option is to start looking in that direction. Hope we get lucky."
"In my experience, there's no such thing as luck." said Severin, standing and holding out the dogtags for Ana to take. "So we're looking for a trail now. I'm not sure I need to tell you it's also important who took Jake. Someone who could be a danger to others at the camp."

"And the blood... it could have been from his shoulder wound, couldn't it?"
"Precisely. It's most likely a person was involved, an animal would leave much more of a sign. Someone went to some trouble to cover their tracks." he said. And then he realized something. "Wait."
He quickly moved past Ana, and crouched again, beginning to root around the dirt and grass. "Maybe he was leaving a trail."

He looked at the bloody dogtags, watching as hopes of finding Jake in one piece quickly shot down. But it didn't mean anything until there was concrete evidence. There was nothing to suggest that blood was even his. He walked over to Ana, taking the dogtags. "If he bled, why isn't there a blood trail?"

"I can spot footprints, but that's about as far as my tracking skills go. You're an army man. I was counting on you having some experience in this."
"I do have training, but it was put into practice mainly with sand and dust." he returned, standing.
"By whatever killed the pilot,"
He looked over at Gwen, and moved quickly over to her until he was very close. "No." he urged her. "Not that. He was taken. Not dragged. Lifted, held above the ground and moved away. No blood. No remains. No noises. It's almost certainly human, it's very easy to cover up your tracks. In a jungle like this, you just...take off your shoes, tread softly and let the conditions do it for you. I doubt whatever killed the pilot did this. There'd be a lot more evidence."

"Then he suddenly stopped. And that's what worries me. The trail just ends. He doesn't backtrack, or move away. It's like he was picked up and taken."
"Picked up? Just...taken?" he asked as he moved to Ana's position, and crouched down. He searched the dirt for any trail that might have softened in rain. "By what?"
