HEIDI
I chuckled at James and Erik's attempts to out-smartass each other. When there was a break in conversation, I introduced myself. "Hi Leia, I'm Heidi. I could help Bella out with the palm leaves. Probably should let the guys deal with the main parts of the structure. In fact guys," I said quickly turning to James and Erik, "if you could make sure I got that one into the ground well enough, I'd really appreciate it." I looked back at Bella and Leia. "When I attempted to set up my shelter, the poles were all falling over when I was tying the tarp down," I sheepishly admitted.

MASON
"Tease?" Mason said, standing up and putting his hands on his hips. There was an pause that lasted about two seconds longer than it should have. Erik glanced at Heidi and Leia, before lowering his head and laughing. "I got nothing. Consider this a rare honor, James. But mark my words, I shall have my revenge."
He spoke with a smile. A worthy foe for his verbal sparring, what Mason saw in James when they first met, would keep him sane hoped.
"Heidi..." he said, following her introduction. "You were supposed to keep with the Star Wars joke. Sheesh." He was clearly joking, as he didn't smile by accident. "We can't let her highness off too easy. Bella," he said, picking on the shy girl a bit. "You know how to put hair in buns? You know, over the ears?"
His school of thought was people were shy because they weren't included. He did his best to include Bella on the ribbing, hoping it wouldn't push her futher away.

SAYID
"Ow! Dammit! That... wasn't important, was it?"
He still couldn't shake the feeling that he'd seen Shannon before someplace, prior to crashing on this island. It was one of those strange notions of déja vu that a person has from time to time. Most of the time, he'd just dismiss such a feeling unless he was questioning someone. Then, he would trust his gut instincts and they would, more often than not, lead him to the truth. On this island, his gut instincts would come in handy again. But he was too busy right now to give much credence to these gut instincts. There would be plenty of time for idle chatter when they were off this island.
"Yes, unfortunately." He sighed, closing his eyes and wiping some sweat from his forehead. He reached out and gave the antenna a cursory look. "But it's repairable."

"Oh, terribly sorry, Han," I said, having fun joining in the joking. "Tell ya what, if you could just bring the Millenium Falcon 'round and give us all a ride home, it might help motivate me. And while you're at it, could you ask Chewie to keep it down?" I added gesturing toward the jungle.

"Sorry," she said. "So what are you working on anyway? I think we heard that French woman's signal enough times..."

LEIA
There were times when Leia cursed her parents for giving her such a easily made fun of name, but it seemed to be a kind of ice-breaker for her right now. She didn't really mind the banter, it was harmless enough. Even though she could almost predict the jokes before they were spoken. Any minute now, there would be some reference to a gold bikini....
"Oh, terribly sorry, Han,"
"He's really more of a Jar Jar Binks than a Han." Leia chimed in, referring to Mason.

I laughed. "Oh, that's low, Leia. Way below the belt," I managed to get out between laughs.

"Sorry. So what are you working on anyway? I think we heard that French woman's signal enough times..."
"I'm attempting to triangulate the signal- figure out where it's coming from. Once we know that," He bent the antenna back into shape so that the rod was as straight as he could make out without applying too much pressure, "We can try to change the signal and send for help."

"In fact guys, if you could make sure I got that one into the ground well enough, I'd really appreciate it".
"No problem" James replied, making his way over and forcing the stick down as hard as he could.
"I got nothing. Consider this a rare honor, James. But mark my words, I shall have my revenge."
"I'll look forward to it" James grinned. Lydia had always been the only one quick witted enough to engage him in such verbal games. It was good to find someone else who was on his level.
"He's really more of a Jar Jar Binks than a Han."
James snorted with laughter, almost slipping off the pole he was trying to lean on. There was something wonderfully sarcastic about her sense of humour.
"Now there's a mental image I'm going to have trouble shaking off" he smiled.

She nodded as if she understood a word of it, which she didn't, and knelt down in the sand picking up a piece that looked of interest and turning it over in her hand. "Where'd you learn how to do all this? The transceiver, the counting iterations," she asked.

He glanced up at her and wondered if he should lie. He decided the truth was better. "I served with the Republican Guard."

"It is. And it is also a long story- one I'm sure we can go over once we're rescued and away from this island."
"Right. So the polar bear, the food running out, whatever killed all the people that French woman knew...those are just minor setbacks?" she remarked, with a slight smile. From everything she'd seen, Sayid was a smart, capable soldier. Didn't mean he was a miracle worker.

SAYID
"Right. So the polar bear, the food running out, whatever killed all the people that French woman knew... those are just minor setbacks?"
She was right. This island held a lot of secrets and there was a part of Sayid which demanded answers to the questions presented by the completely illogical things that he had witnessed during the past few days since the plane crash. But there were more important things that required his attention away from this island. If he found out the truth behind these bizarre secrets, that would be fascinating. But he wouldn't go out of his way or jeopardize the chance to leave the island for the sake of finding out how those polar bears got to a tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean or any of the other quandaries Shannon had brought back to mind.
He tried to explain this to her in as few words as possible. "There is a perfectly logical explanation for everything. If we find out why things are the way they are on this island, that would be wonderful. But, right now, my main priority is getting us out of this place as quickly as possible."
Having said that, he remembered Kate and her task of placing the first antenna. He wondered if things were going as planned or not. "As for the food, some people from the camp are looking after that." He hoped.

"He's really more of a Jar Jar Binks than a Han."
"Alright, sister, I can take a ribbing with the best of them," Mason said, moving closer to her. "But if you ever say I look like James' mom again, well, it won't be pretty. You follow, toots?"

"Alright, sister, I can take a ribbing with the best of them. But if you ever say I look like James' mom again, well, it won't be pretty. You follow, toots?"
The smile faded slightly from James' face. It wasn't so much what Mason had called his mother, afterall, he himself had called her much worse on several occasions lately. It was that the mere mention of her brought back a series of recent, painful and incredibly unpleasent memories that, at least for the last few minutes, he had been able to forget. That luxury was no more.
"You've clearly never met her" James replied, his smile now considerably forced. "As far as looks and personality go, she bears a much closer resemblance to Jabba the Hutt. Come on, Mason" he continued, forcing the last stick into the ground a little harder than was practically neccessary. "Just let it go and tell us what to do next with this shelter, will you?".

LEIA
Apparently, Mason was more like Darth Vadar as his latest remark seemed to have darkened the air somewhat. Leia also got the distinct feeling he was threatening her a little, which was completely unwarranted. It struck her that if he was willing to dish out a few taunts, then he should have thick enough skin to be able to take a few back. Unwilling to push the matter further, she changed the subject and ignored him.
"So ladies," Her attention turned to Heidi and Bella again. "It's palm weaving 101." She picked up a leaf and started folding the frond back and forth.

HEIDI
I gave a nod of thanks to James for checking on the pole. The air of laughing and ribbing seemed to have dissolved as everyone turned more serious. Whether it was certain things said in jest or just because it'd gone on long enough, I wasn't sure.
"So ladies," "It's palm weaving 101."
"Too bad I skipped that and the underwater basket weaving courses in college." I sighed then looked down at the palm leaves. "Okay teacher, I'm ready whenever you are. Do we have everything we'll need? What are we using as thread?"

MASON
Mason wiped the sweat from his brow, looking at James and sighed. "Sorry, I'm used to... a little more... I was a little.... I screwed up." Mason delt in truth and was the first to admit he had made mistakes in the past., and he looked around. "We need to set up a wall on this end, and then lay down the foundation for the roof."
