"As for the food, some people from the camp are looking after that."
"Yeah, the bald guy with the knife fetish is gonna' bag a boar," she said, the doubt apparent in her voice. "You think he'll actually do it?"

"Sorry, I'm used to... a little more... I was a little.... I screwed up."
"Don't worry about it. We all make mistakes." He smiled, first at Mason, then at Leia. Although he had only known him a short while, James felt sure that the thing Mason was used to was respect. Moreover, he knew that it couldn't have been easy for him to admit that he'd made a mistake. The fact that he had been able to do so was a particularly promising sign.
"We need to set up a wall on this end, and then lay down the foundation for the roof."
"Okay. What do you think would work best?" James replied, looking over the materials around them. "I just want to make sure your shelter turns out better than mine" he said, smiling round at Bella.

"Yeah, the bald guy with the knife fetish is gonna' bag a boar. You think he'll actually do it?"
He was a little surprised by her defeatism. It seemed she had a negative response to every positive point he made. "What reason do I have to think he can't?"

"What reason do I have to think he can't?"
She shrugged silently in response. True, she didn't know Locke any better than the rest of them; maybe he was a great hunter and he'd bring a whole herd of wild pigs back to the camp.
"I guess I'm just...pessimistic, given everything that's happened," she said. "I'm not real good at the 'roughing it' stuff. Try not to look too surprised."

It was difficult to stop himself from grinning at her. She could be funny when she wasn't being pessimistic. Cute, even. And he realized that he was being a little too uptight and rude to Shannon. The stress of making the tranceivers had been grating on his nerves and while he liked to think he operated best under pressure, the fact that so much hinged on the success of his jury-rigged triangulation was wearing him down a bit. The thought of taking a break and chatting a little more openly was quite tempting.
He set down the antenna and said, in a much more calm voice than he had used with her before, "It's all right to be afraid. It's when you let the fear get in the way of doing what needs to be done that it becomes a problem."
Nadia. He remembered why he was so much more desperate to leave this island than most of the rest of the survivors. He had to get to Los Angeles and find Nadia. Sayid picked up the antenna and began wrestling intently with a bundle of poorly soldered wires that dangled from a cut in the rubber lining.

"It's all right to be afraid. It's when you let the fear get in the way of doing what needs to be done that it becomes a problem."
"Easy for a soldier to say," she retorted. Not so easy for a dance teacher with a privileged upbringing to do. It seemed there was so much that needed to be done, and she didn't feel qualified to do any of it.
"I just...I used to rely on my dad for a lot. And after he died..." she let her voice trail off. "Well, Boone's really helped me. But he has an annoying way of always reminding me how much he's helped me."
As he was fumbling with cords, she retrieved a bottle of fingernail glue from her bag and handed it over to him. "I don't know if this'll help at all; it's pretty strong stuff," she said. "Just don't get it in your hair. My friend Lauren learned that the hard way."

"I just... I used to rely on my dad for a lot. And after he died... Well, Boone's really helped me. But he has an annoying way of always reminding me how much he's helped me."
He knew what that was like. A lot of people had lost family in Iraq. Sometimes it was impossible to find a family which had lost a son to American bombs, a mother to Iranian landmines, a father to Shia death squads or a daughter to the predations of an untouchable Baathist official. It was every man for himself back "home". Only a select few in the Republican Guard remembered who they served- not the Baathist Party, not Saddam Hussein and not Allah, but the people. Sayid counted himself lucky that the same anarchy had not consumed the survivors that had ruined Iraq.
He just let her keep talking, letting her voice serve as a comfortable white noise to keep him relaxed on the task at hand. A little like leaving the radio on while cooking.
"I don't know if this'll help at all; it's pretty strong stuff. Just don't get it in your hair. My friend Lauren learned that the hard way."
This time he couldn't help himself but smile as he looked up from the antenna. "Thank you. I'll try to keep that in mind." He said, looking at the label on it to see if the stuff was useful.

"Thank you. I'll try to keep that in mind."
"You're welcome." She returned his smile, since it seemed like something he only did on rare occasions. Which was a shame because it really lit up those dark eyes of his. But he probably didn't have that much to smile about back in Iraq, and the situation certainly hadn't improved by being stuck on this island.
"I mean, I might need it back if I break a nail or something, but otherwise it's all yours," she said.

((OOC: Mwahahaha!!! You wouldn't hit a guy with insensitivity issues, would you? )) SAYID "You're welcome. I mean, I might need it back if I break a nail or something, but otherwise it's all yours."He nodded thoughtfully, still smiling somewhat, and then placed the bottle down on the ground beside him as he continued trying to complete the circuit between two of the conducting wires. Or, at least, they seemed like conducting wires. He became engrossed in solving this issue in an instant, his grim determination returning.

SHANNON
Sensing that his focus was fully back on the mechanical stuff, she decided it was as good a time as any to make an exit. And her breathing had finally returned to normal, so maybe she could finally track down her wayward stepbrother.
"I should let you get back to work or whatever," she said, getting to her feet again.

LEIA
"Okay teacher, I'm ready whenever you are. Do we have everything we'll need? What are we using as thread?"
"Well we don't actually use a thread like you might think, we just," she tugged off one of the longer fronds from the base of a leaf and held it up. "We use the longest strips and weave them into the others. Like this..." With a little deft handiwork, Leia was able to secure the frond in place by looping it under and over the others. She pulled free a few more larger lengths from another leaf and did the same thing again so that the result resembled the weaving on a wicker basket.
"It's kinda tedious after a while, but you can see that the more you secure in place the sturdier it gets. You just tuck the ends in to stop them coming loose." She held up what she'd already done for the others to see.
"And yes, I was immensely bored when I figured out how to do that." She joked, aware that weaving leaves wasn't everyone's idea of a good time.

THE SOUND OF TREES BREAKING FOLLOWED BY THE FAMILIAR GRINDING GROWLING CAN BE HEARD IN THE DIRECTION OF THE MID-JUNGLE BOAR TERRITORY.

James' head snapped instantly toward the jungle, his body seized by a sudden, inexplicable chill. He'd heard that sound before...they all had...whatever had been out there the night of the plane crash had returned, seemingly closer and more malevolent than before. James hand went subconsciously to his pocket, checking that the notepad was still there. He turned slowly to face the trees, just catching the after shock as distant foliage bent and shook in its wake. He narrowed his eyes, a mixture of fear and burning curiosity coursing through his veins, and before he knew what he was doing, he had walked up to the very edge of the jungle, squinting intently through the trees as though hypnotised.
It's not possible...it's just not possible...

LEIA
Startled by the sudden sound, Leia let out a squeak of a noise that might have been a scream if she'd actually put any effort into it. She sprang up from the ground, her eye's fixed on the waving trees in the distance, mesmerised like a snake charmer's pet. Seemingly, she wasn't the only one with an inquisitive nature, as James had started to wander closer to the sound.
"What's he doing?" She said to no-one in particular. It looked like he was about to go striding into the jungle as if the thing making the noise was actually calling out to him. Without waiting for an answer, she headed after him.
Since she was still basically a stranger to him, Leia wasn't sure what she should say or do to get his attention. So when she finally caught up to him, she just gently caught his forearm with her hand, hoping that it would ground him in reality.

James jumped slightly, turning absentmindedly to see Leia stood beside him. He blinked and shook his head slightly; it was as if he had awoken from some deep revere, with the reality of his surroundings now rushing back to greet him.
"Sorry, I...um...thanks..." he mumbled, unsure of what had happened and embaressed by his unusual state of mind. Whoever Leia was, James had little doubt that she already thought him to be a complete and certified basket case.

Erik walked up behind James and Leia, looking at the two of them, as he stood to the other side of James, putting his right hand up to his chin.
"Who's out there?" he said, looking into the jungle, then quickly scanning the camp.

HEIDI
My concentration had been on the lesson on leaf weaving and I followed along with the steps. Of course mine didn't turn out as great as Leia's had, but she'd had a lot of practice having already built herself a roof. It'd get better at this leaf weaving thing as I went on. I'd been about to compliment her on figuring out on her own something that would be of extreme benefit to our survival but the words died as my full attention was drawn toward the direction of that terrifying sound.
My line of sight was momentarily interrupted as James walked toward the sound. "James..." I said in a quiet alarmed voice but he was already out of earshot. Then Leia followed. Where they crazy? I put a protective arm around little Sarah to stop her in case curiosity got the better of her.
"Who's out there?"
Erik's voice startled me and I looked at him in confusion as I first thought he'd meant someone was making that noise and knocking down trees, then it hit me. Looking back at the jungle in fear for the wellbeing of some of our fellow survivors, I concentrated on remembering plans I'd heard being discussed. "Oh God," I said as I realized how many people were in there. And not just in the outskirts, but farther in. In answer to Erik, I said quietly, "The three that went boar hunting; Michael, Locke, Kate. And there's several other people who went in there to try to find something or someone." There were probably several other people who'd randomly wandered into the outskirts and I gave a sigh of relief as a few of them came running out to stop and stare along the beach as they caught their breath.

LEIA
"Sorry, I...um...thanks..."
There was something going on in James' head that Leia couldn't figure out. She looked at him strangely as if the answer might come to her but when she drew a blank, she found all she could do was offer a quick half smile. That was the trouble with being thrown together with a load of strangers. There was no easy way to know what they were thinking or how they'd react.
"The three that went boar hunting; Michael, Locke, Kate. And there's several other people who went in there to try to find something or someone."
Leia's attention whipped back to Heidi, a surprising amount of concern on her face for people that she didn't really know.
"Do you think they're alright in there? I mean, you don't think it's going after them do you?" She turned to Mason as well, knowing full well that none of them really had the answers.
