SAYID
"So...any word on Jack's patient? The last time Jake and I spoke with the doctor, he just said the man was in critical condition."
"And so it seems to still be the case." he glanced over his shoulder, in the direction of the tent. To anyone else, he would either deny the seriousness of the man's condition, or would simply repeat what Jack would say. But Gwen had helped since the crash, and he felt the need to be more honest with her. "I doubt he'll survive."

"I doubt he'll survive."
Gwen frowned as they continued to walk, people still going about their business in the glow from the fires. The gravity of the man's situation, the possibility that he might die, didn't really hit her till Sayid said what he did.
"Do you think Jack is of the same opinion?" she asked, remembering Sarah's statement about her ex-husband being so intent on fixing things. "Granted, he was probably counting on rescue being here by now. But if he can't be helped...if the 40-plus other people on this island could be better served by all the medicine and care that Jack is giving this man..."
She glanced sideways at Sayid. "I'm sorry, that must sound terribly harsh."

"I'm sorry, that must sound terribly harsh."
"The truth can be harsh." he admitted. "It's not a comfortable topic, and all that needs done to save this man must be done, but...as you say, if there's no way to save his life, to continue to use up valuable resources is a waste."

"Yes, I suppose," she said softly. They'd all had to deal with the deaths of their fellow passengers--in the initial crash, and the burning of the fuselage. But somehow it hit harder for someone to die now. Just when they could fool themselves that the worst might be behind them.
"So you were headed to Los Angeles?" she began. "Was that your final stop, or were you going somewhere after that?"

"I didn't really have anything planned. I was just going to meet with a girl I knew." he explained.

"I didn't really have anything planned. I was just going to meet with a girl I knew."
"Ah, of course," she said with a forced smile. Why wouldn't he? He was handsome and brilliant and had a lovely accent. It was foolish to think there wouldn't be some tall Czech supermodel waiting at the gate for him. And that was that. "I'm sure she'll be very glad to see you again," she added.

He gave a smile. If Nadia remembered or cared about him at all. She probabaly even had a family. Had moved on from him. But she was all he had left, really. "Thank you, I hope so...do you have anyone besides your family waiting for you?"

"Thank you, I hope so...do you have anyone besides your family waiting for you?"
"No, no," she shook her head. "Just friends. My 'urban family,' as I like to call them. I spend more time with them than I do the people I'm genetically related to, anyway. Of course I don't actually spend much time with anybody since I took this job."

"It's understandable. The people we see most of the time become our family." he replied as he walked with her.

"It's understandable. The people we see most of the time become our family."
She gave a short laugh. "I shudder to think what that means if we get stuck on this island for an extended period of time," she remarked. "Considering I've unwittingly made enemies of a number of people. Might make the family reunions a bit awkward."

"Enemies?" he asked, raising his eyebrows. "Like whom?"

"Oh, my, where do I start?" she sighed. "Sarah, Sawyer, Ana-Lucia. That Dr. Arzt fellow seemed very hurt that I didn't want to see his bug collection, but I have a perfectly legitimate fear of things with more than four legs. It wasn't personal."
She shrugged. "I don't know, perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way. I just need to realize that I can't keep everyone happy all of the time."

"True." he nodded. "If you try to please everyone, you inevitably upset a few people."

"Upset? That's putting it mildly," she groaned. "I'm fairly sure Ana-Lucia would have slapped those handcuffs on me if she'd had the choice. Needless to say, she wasn't quite as understanding as you when I confirmed the plane was off-course. Apparently I've been evil and malicious and deceitful."

"Ah, yes, your evil and vile attempt to not send the entire camp into a frenzied panic." he laughed. "You're truly a terrible person."

"In her opinion, yes, it would seem that way. As if I didn't feel bad enough. I shouldn't let her get to me. Just tell me I shouldn't let her get to me," she requested.

"Oh, reason's got nothing to do with it," she shook her head. "It's just my masochistic tendencies. Those survived the crash as well, I'm happy to say."
She pursed her lips in thought. "Okay, I admit I'm not an expert on transceivers, but the cockpit was still fairly intact when we found it. There might still be some equipment there that could be useful to you," she offered.

He nodded thoughtfully. "Perhaps. I'll try to get the transciever working for now, and if all else fails, a trek to the cockpit might be a good idea."
