"Nice to meet you guys," I said as I shook Ruby's then Jamie's hand. "So..." I said as I sat back down again next to Leia. Man I sucked at breaking the ice. I always felt so awkward around new people and the fact that everyone was not talking much was definitely not helping me. I looked around at everyone wondering if I had intruded on an important conversation. "Are we interrupting anything?" Please say I'm not because I'll be embarrassed as all hell. I thought.

"Well, come on then," I said, giving his sleeve a friendly tug. "I'll introduce you. I'm not really good at the approaching people thing on my own but if I've got a friend with me, I'm a little braver, so you're doin' me a favor," I said, smiling as we neared the group again. By the looks of things, introductions were currently being made so our timing worked out nicely.
"And we're back. There's still a pretty good selection of stuff in the clothes pile, thankfully," I said to the two who knew where Willo and I had gone. "Hey James," I added with a smile and small wave then finally turned to the two ladies I hadn't met yet and gestured to myself and Willo as I introduced us. "Hey, I'm Heidi, this is Willo."

HEIDI "Well hell, I don't think anybody was expecting that." I gave a 'let's head back' nod toward the direction we'd come as I started walking. The group had grown since we'd wandered away from just Leia and Vivian. James had settled next to Leia and two women I didn't recognize had joined the group. "You already meet everyone over there?" I asked, noticing that I didn't recognize at least one of the newcomers. ((OOC: Two women being Jamie and Ruby. I think I named all the people in the group. If I missed anyone, lemme know. ))

"Brooding is a perfectly normal thing," I said in all seriousness. "We all go through tough situations, bad luck, whatever you want to call it. But dwelling on something for too long..." I paused and shook my head, "isn't going to change the past. This theory of yours--how there's those who believe in luck and those who don't because they usually have an abundance of it--is interesting and in a way, it sometimes rings true but I don't completely agree with it."
I studied him for a moment, taking in that sadness that seemed to lurk in his eyes then briefly looked down at the sand before back at him, slightly embarrassed at staring too long and hoping that I hadn't made him uncomfortable. "Are you always expecting the worst, Willo?" I put my hands in my pockets and looked at the shore beyond Willo as I clarified. "I've always thought that everyone does have a little control over their luck. You continually think negatively and dwell on bad things in the past, you create a negative energy. You try to think positive and dwell on the good things in your life, however minimal they may be, you create a positive energy. That may sound like a load of crap to you," I said with a shrug as I looked back at him, "but it's worked for me for the most part."

I grinned. "Can't help it. It's second nature to me. It's like asking you not to...what's the word," I tapped my lips in thought as I looked up, searching for the word. "Ah yes, like asking you not to brood," I said looking back at him.

"There is not a word, Heidi, not a word in the English language that I am aware of--and I know many, many words--that can describe how I've been," he said, flatly. "It's just--there's no way to explain it with me talking."
I cringed. "That bad, huh?" I asked rhetorically.
"We got anything in gray?"
Gray? That was a specific request for clothing on a deserted island. "To bring out your eyes or fit your mood?" I teased. "Hm, not sure. I've never looked through the piles but it ain't exactly an outlet mall."

I couldn't help but snicker at the bad coconut pun.
"Can someone please get me something other than a white t-shirt. I'd rather not look like a scene from a John Mellencamp song."
"Alright, alright," I said in mock defeat as I stood up and brushed the sand off. "I'll be right back, guys," I said to Leia and Vivian and then waved to Willo to follow me. "This way." After a few moments of silence, I said, "How've ya been, Willo? I mean, apart from being the victim of a mango tree's personal vendetta?"

WILLO: "I got mangoed," "This one is pretty much a goner."
I tried not to laugh but with his expression added to the phrase he used to describe what happened made the laughter bubble up. I quickly covered my mouth and composed myself. "Sorry," I said, a smile still playing on my face.
JAMES: "There should be a couple of white ones in my shelter. Help yourself"
"There's also a couple places where some people have separated the unclaimed clothes into piles," I added as I watched James walk past. I turned to Leia and gave her a what's the matter with him? expression.

VIVIAN: “So how well are you two adapting to Island life? Some are adapting better than other, think it’s a bloody vacation.”
"Adapting?" I said with a frown. My optimistic nature hadn't let me 'adapt' as that would mean accepting that there was no rescue coming. I shrugged and simply answered, "I'm just taking things one day at a time until rescue arrives."
WILLO: "Anyone got any shirts?"
I heard Willo asking nobody in particular something about... shirts, was it? Thought I heard the word 'shirts.' "Hey Willo," I called out, waving him over. I waited until he was closer to clarify. "You're looking for a shirt?"

I looked over at the woman that Leia put my question to and listened to the response.
"I believe she over did herself, the heat got to her."
"That's understandable. I don't do so well in the heat and sun and in Claire's condition..." There was no need to continue on with the obvious.
"with a water, little rest, she'll do fine." she turned to the the brown hair girl and smiled, "I'm Vivian waters, i don't think we met."
"Hey Vivian. I'm Heidi," I said with a smile as I reached across to shake her hand.

I could feel my stomach do a somersault at the 'hole in his knee' part of her story and was glad she didn't go into more detail. Leia's attention was taken as James passed and I looked from one to the other. Uh huh, I thought to myself. Funny how several people were paring up. Probably the trauma of what happened. It was natural to want that comfort of another human close by.
Without mentioning or suggesting I thought anything was going on between James and Leia as it wasn't my business, I spoke again to get her attention. "Sounds like it was Severin you're describing. I saw them carry someone else in. Looked like Claire. I wanted to see if she was okay but I don't wanna get in the way. You know if she's doing alright?"

I just shrugged and then ate the slice myself as I looked in the direction where all the commotion was. "Any idea what's going on over there?" I asked with a nod in the direction Leia had come from.

"Oh no, it's cool. I'd love some company." I smiled at her as she sat down. "I'm not so good being in the sun for a long time either. Makes me dizzy. Mango?" I asked as I held a slice out toward her.

I watched the commotion from my spot in the shade trying to figure out what was going on without being nosy or getting in the way. First, the day starts with a woman drowning. Then the group who'd gone looking for something the other day returned and it looked like one of them--it was too far of a distance to make out exactly who--had been limping and was taken to the infirmary. Then another commotion as I looked up to see Claire being taken into the infirmary just as the other group was leaving it. Now Kate was running around the area asking if anybody had seen Jack.
This was not our best day ever. I started to wonder if this was how things were going to be from now on. Would things just keep getting worse and worse on this island with no modern technologies, no modern medicines, a serious lack of water and foods with the types of nourishments our bodies needed to live off, none of the other niceties we'd become accustomed to? It was really becoming difficult to hold on to my optimism.

KATE
They needed to get Claire over to Jack and quickly. "Come on, let's get her inside."
Kate lead them over to the infirmary tent and pushed the tent flap aside just as a few people were exiting.

KATE
She got to her feet and looked in the direction Walt had pointed. True enough, Claire had fallen down, passed out more likely, and Charlie and Michael were in the process of picking her up.
Kate ran over. "What happened?" she asked as she looked at Claire with concern as they carried her.

CLAIRE
"I thought so. Restless, passionate. You know, everyone thinks astrology's just a load of crap, but that's 'cause they don't get it. I could do your chart if you wanted."
KATE
She stopped what she was doing and gave Claire a "you're kidding me" look. Kate had never much been into the astrology thing.
CLAIRE
"Or not," she added then muttered "Geminis" under her breath.
KATE
Kate chuckled leading to Claire chuckling as they continue to sort through the clothes.
After several minutes of silence, Kate looked up at Claire wondering why she'd become so quiet. She looked a bit pale.
"Claire, why don't you get out of the sun. Get yourself a bottle of water and relax a bit?"
Claire lightly shook her head in agreement and headed away leaving Kate to herself again.

"Anytime, sweetie," I said with a smile. I watched her for a couple of minutes until she fell asleep then wandered off to find some breakfast and to catch up with some of the other survivors.
Going to the food pile, which seemed to dwindle faster than those gathering fruit could replenish it, I took one of the mangoes and a plastic knife and sat down in the shade.
