A mid-jungle area a little ways in from the mid-section survivor's camp. Location found in box F4 below: Each box is 3 miles by 3 miles. It takes an hour to walk 3 miles. But also keep in mind that hiking (like that really steep hill to get to higher ground) will take a heck of a lot longer and that if you're running (like from some jungle thing), that you'll get somewhere faster.

Gwen awoke to the serene sounds of the jungle that surrounded them. And for a moment, she could delude herself into thinking that she was hearing the relaxing noise machine that sat on her bedside table at home. But when she opened her eyes, and saw the sunlight beginning to filter through the trees above, she remembered the sounds were live and in-person.
She rose up on an elbow to see that the fire had burnt itself out and that everyone else still seemed to be asleep. Thankfully the night had been uneventful, albeit still filled with apprehension. They'd start out on their way back to the beach as soon as everyone was ready, and she was happy to let Ana and Walter take the lead. She wondered what they'd been discussing last night and guessed it was something to do with Jake. Oh well, if they wanted her to know, they'd tell her. For now, she had other concerns.
She laid back down on her backpack pillow and looked over at Severin. He was sleeping, but probably not peacefully. He must have been in a great deal of pain, but he'd never admit it. Wouldn't want to worry anyone. They'd consult with Jack the moment they returned. And if she had to, she'd pester Sawyer for painkillers from his stash. She was obliged to care for him, to be at his side whether he wanted it or not. Operating on guilt yet again. At least this island was offering her repeated chances for atonement...

Severin hadn't slept particularly well. Or, to be more accurate, he hadn't slept. Every slight movement to try and get less uncomfortable had resulted in more jabs of pain. It was very difficult to sleep when your body was racked with it. Pain was worse when you concentrated on it, so the mind had to work to lessen the agony. And when your mind was working, it was harder to sleep, especially when there was nothing to do but wait for morning.
Still, every so often he'd look over at Gwen and feel a little more comfortable that she was there. That she didn't see him as some injured cripple she was obliged to take care of, but because she was a good person and felt guilt that she shouldn't. And then he looked over at her as he woke up, almost as an instinct. He realized he probably didn't look particularly handsome. He probably had unflattering stubble and heavy bags under his eyes. Uncombed hair, and God, he probably snored.
But why was he concerned, anyway? He had an arrow through his leg, why the hell was he trying to impress?
He squirmed uncomfortably, and raised his head a little to see who else was awake.

"Morning," she said in a hushed tone, as she noticed him starting to stir. "How are you feeling?"

"How are you feeling?"
He looked over at her. He kept his tone low. "Like I've been shot through the leg with an arrow, screamed at by an incompetent nurse and then made to sleep in a jungle." he said simply, with a little, kind smile. "Otherwise, I'm fine. Thank you. Did you sleep well? Or as well as is possible in the middle of a jungle?"

"As well as can be expected," she replied. "Never thought I'd long for the peace and tranquility of my makeshift shelter on the beach."

"Never thought I'd long for the peace and tranquility of my makeshift shelter on the beach."
"I have to agree with that." he said. "All of a sudden, the shelter I made from a mix of travel bags, blankets and pieces of anything sounds very appealing."

"Oh, it's positively five-star. Compared to this," she agreed with a smile. "And it's likely you'll be spending a lot of time there till you've recovered. Y'know, if you wanted out of firewood-gathering duty so badly, all you had to do was ask. No need to get yourself seriously wounded...."

He chuckled lightly. "Yes, I foresee lots of lying around shrouded in a blanket of everlasting boredom."

"Yes, I foresee lots of lying around shrouded in a blanket of everlasting boredom."
"You mean to say you wouldn't welcome a bit of boredom after all we've been through? The crash, the fights, the traps, the downpours, the boar hunts, the...whatever it is ripping trees out of the ground," she rattled off, turning her head to look upward at the tree canopy. "Then again you did voluntarily place yourself at the center of my and Ana's dispute, driven by a sense of chivalry or perhaps masochism...."

"Oh, definately masochism." he said simply, nodding in agreement. Copying her, he also looked up at the tree canopy.

Whatever it was that Walter wanted to show to Ana, he'd decided it was best left until daybreak. Traversing the jungle in the daylight was dangerous enough. Doing it in the dark would have been just plain foolish. So at first light, while the rest of the camp was still sleeping, he'd woken Ana with a shake of the boot and quietly led her away from the makeshift camp.
They'd wandered about a half hour away from the group, Ana surprisngly just following the old man's lead to wherever it was they were heading.
"So you gonna tell me what it is that's so secret?" She asked finally, stomping along behind him.

"Oh, definately masochism."
"How lucky that you get to limp back to the beach today then," she said with a smile. She sat up, stretching out her arms and looking around at the others. "I hate to wake them but we need to get moving. I'm sure Ana will...wait, where is Ana?"

He lifted his head slightly, looking around. "Good point. Where is she?"

"Good point. Where is she?"
Gwen got to her feet, her muscles making several groans of protest, and made a quick headcount. "Walter seems to be gone as well," she observed. "Perhaps they're off conferring about our next move. No need to panic just yet."

WALTER "We're here," he said, and pointed to the ground. "I walked by here earlier but didn't tell the others. How good are you at reading footprints?"

Ana crouched down next to the spot that Walter had pointed out.
"Boots. Male." She stated, noticing the imprints in the dirt. "One set." Her eyes followed the track a short distance. "Someone walking...."Ana made a gesture towards the tracks. "Then stopping." She frowned and looked back up at Walter. "Then they backed up?"

WALTER
"...as if he had seen something," he said, turning to her. "And then they just stop, as if he was carried off by nothing."
He looked to the left and the right, making sure they were alone. "Ana, we've got a serious issue here. We're not the only people on this island."

"Perhaps they're off conferring about our next move. No need to panic just yet."
"Well, all right. For now, I'm just interested in-" He began to sit up, accidently straining his leg. Pain ripped through him, and he let out a short, pained groan. He sighed. "That was a bad idea."
