As Ana lie there recovering, Gwen tried to focus on the serene sounds of the jungle that had finally settled back down on the scene. Any ceasefire between them was tenuous and short-lived at best, and certainly didn't prevent either of them from lobbing verbal assaults at one another. But she felt a pang of regret that Severin had been there to witness their sparring--she had promised him she'd make an effort to get along with Ana, or at least avoid her, but the woman was so bloody infuriating.
"Will she be alright now?" she asked Severin. "Relatively speaking..."

"Will she be alright now? Relatively speaking..."
He looked at her. "She'll be fine, as long as she doesn't strain it. Normally, I'd advise using a sling, but we're in the abscence of those." he replied. "Why were the pair of you out here, anyway?"

"Why were the pair of you out here, anyway?"
She'd already resolved to tell Severin the truth. Or some version of it. Ana could harass her about her choice later, but she didn't want another situation like she'd already had with their mutual friend.
"Well, I suppose we were hammering out some sort of temporary accord between us," she answered. "No one's seen Jake since yesterday. I was concerned about it, and I wanted Ana's input. I figured she'd know more about dealing with missing persons."

"No one's seen Jake since yesterday. I was concerned about it, and I wanted Ana's input. I figured she'd know more about dealing with missing persons."
Concern crossed his face. Jake was still missing, and on an island where the trees were moved by unseen forces, that wasn't a good sign. He didn't want to sound overly pessimistic by suggesting he might be dead, and even he had to admit it was too soon to think of that as a possibility.
He then turned to Ana. "And how exactly did you manage to get a dislocated shoulder...?"

"Believe me, you've got nothing to worry about. I've never thrown a punch in my life. Hell, I don't think I even know how to properly throw a punch."
James laughed. "It's not something you really think about. Sometimes you just snap and then the moment fuels your actions". He stopped for a moment, aware that he was revealing a side to his personality that he never enjoyed deploying. "But I'm sure Sawyer would love to demonstrate for you. He's been doing it ever since we got here" he smiled sarcastically.
"That woman seems so angry every time I see her. She's got some major issues."
"Yeah...she has..." James replied, looking over to where Ana had been tied. He felt a brief moment of sympathy for her before frowning to himself and carefully removing some creeper vines from a nearby tree; they seemed strong and could possibly be used as binding for the young girl's shelter.
To Hell with sympathy. Do you think she feels even the slightest remorse for what she did to you?

The calm after the storm. That was what Ana was feeling now. She heard Gwen and Severin talking about her, but it was as if they were talking over her. It didn't matter. Now the hot poker feeling in her shoulder had become less distracting, her mind had shifted onto something else.
Find Jake. Fast.
Gwen's latest revelation that he may be caught in a trap had added a new sense of urgency to the matter. Ana knew he was more than capable of taking care of himself. Even with an injured shoulder. After all, the man was in the Navy. If he couldn't look after himself in a survival situation, then his recruitment officer had made a terrible mistake. But if someone had set traps here - the thought crossed her mind that they may be bear traps...especially after what they had run into on the hike - then getting free of one may not be possible for a guy on his own with only one strong arm.
"And how exactly did you manage to get a dislocated shoulder...?"
"Heavy lifting." Was the terse reply she gave as she dragged herself to her feet. Her shoulder was fixed, no time to waste feeling sorry for herself on the floor. She dusted herself down as best she could, careful not to aggrevate her shoulder. With the back of her left hand, she wiped the sweat from her brow and turned to Gwen.
It was time for Ana to put her game face on.
"Who saw Jake last?" She asked her, as if moments ago she hadn't wanted to smack her in the face for being a pompous ass.

"Who saw Jake last?"
"Um, I'm not sure," she answered slowly, fearful that her supposition that Ana was the last person to see him would earn her a solid smack. "I didn't speak to him again, after our...discussion yesterday morning," she said, glancing uneasily at Severin.
"He never checked back in with Jack, and no one else had any light to shed on the situation."

Ana's brow furrowed as she thought what to do.
"You've looked for him on the beach? By what's left of the fuselage?" In truth, the beach wasn't an easy place to lose someone. There were too many people congregating there. Someone would have seen him. He was a good looking guy, Ana knew at least she would have kept an eye on him.
"He's not gone swimming or anything?" Though she knew Jack had told him to keep his bandages dry.

"He's not gone swimming or anything?"
She shook her head. "I canvassed the neighborhood, such as it is. There's no sign of him," she said. "So...what's the plan?"

I agreed. It was probably something that was second nature, should the need to sock someone arrived. "And the very reason I'd rather avoid him as well, thank you very much," I said dryly. "That's another one with issues." Arms now full, I stood up. "I'm finding a new appreciation for how good my life was growing up." I shifted the bundle of branches in my arms and wished I had a free hand to tuck the hair that had fallen into my face behind my ear, having to instead flick my head to the side.
Seems they had everything under control here and that they were almost done. "I'm going to head back. I'll see you guys soon."
With that, I started walking back toward the camp but at a slower, more cautious pace as the view of my footing was obstructed by the armful of branches.

"I canvassed the neighborhood, such as it is. There's no sign of him, So...what's the plan?"
"If it's possible he's simply lost, or caught in a trap somewhere, then a search party would be a good idea." he said, looking from Gwen to Ana as they spoke.

"If it's possible he's simply lost, or caught in a trap somewhere, then a search party would be a good idea."
She nodded in agreement. "There are probably some people back on the beach who'd be willing to help. Not that we want a lot of people wandering about this jungle. We still don't know what's out there," she noted. "What, and how much, do we tell them?"

Ana began to pace, still holding her arm to keep it steady. She couldn't shake the bad feeling she had about this.
"We tell them as little as possible." Ana cut into the conversation. "I know you're capable of that, Gwen." She added with a sly look. It didn't stay for long as her leadership skills began to take over.
"So long as whoever wants to help sticks close by us, we can look out for them and make sure they don't get caught up in anything. I've been out here quite a bit, and I haven't seen anything remotely trap like. It's possible the one Jasmine and Sarah got stuck in was the only one." Though it still nagged at the back of her mind who would have put it there.
"You two need to get back to the beach and round up a few people willing to go look for Jake. Ideally, people who know what he looks like and that have a little common sense. In other words...don't ask Shannon." The sound of that woman shreiking 'I shouldn't have come on the hike!' rang in her ears. But after running into a polar bear in the middle of the jungle, she doubted Shannon would be volunteering for anything anyway.
"He's been gone a day at most. That means he can't have wandered too far into the jungle. I can't see him venturing out further without at least mentioning it to someone. Odds are, if he's not where I think he is then he's still near the beach somewhere."
Ana's first thought was that Jake might have gone back to the spot she first met him, to the same spot where they burned his friend's body days earlier. Perhaps he'd just needed some alone time, away from the other survivors.
"Meet me back here in an hour and bring whatever water you can gather. See if you can't get a few basic medical supplies - bandages and such - just in case we find him and he is hurt. And if he is," there was a horrible sinking feeling in Ana's stomach, "then I hope popping dislocated shoulders back in isn't the only medical knowledge you have." She said to Severin.

"I know you're capable of that, Gwen."
He grinded his teeth. "Ana...." he growled, ready to rush to Gwen's defense if need be.

Ana had shifted into military fascist commander mode, and Sev decided it was best to simply listen. It was surprising how much she reminded him of his old army friends.

Sev had been keeping silent about the possibility Jake was injured, or worse, dead. "I'm sure he's fine, but I have basic medical training. Besides, none of the traps so far have been lethal." He looked over at Gwen as he spoke, trying to give her an encouraging look.

She simply nodded in agreement at Ana's orders. She certainly didn't have any better ideas and she'd rather not get into another war of words, even if Severin seemed ready to defend her.
"Right, I'll talk to Jack about borrowing a first aid kit and see who else is around and unoccupied with other tasks," she said, a description which fit pretty much everyone in the camp. But then Ana had specified to only ask those who knew Jake and had common sense, which narrowed the field a bit.

Ana-Lucia turned to leave, but in her haste, she nearly forgot to say thank you to Severin for helping her out. She paused and spoke over her shoulder.
"Feels like new." She lied, referring to her arm. "Appreciate it." She made it seem like she was speaking only to Severin, but her gaze drifted to Gwen too. Actually saying thank you would have required way more tequila than they had on the island though.
With that, Ana headed off to where she'd first found Jake.

"Appreciate it."
He turned to Gwen. "I may be reading too much into it, but that almost seem like an indirect, grudging thank you."

"I may be reading too much into it, but that almost seem like an indirect, grudging thank you."
"I fear it's the closest I'll ever get to one from her," she sighed. "And we may never know how she really hurt her arm. Doesn't matter anyway. Up for another trip into Jurassic Jungle?" she asked, turning back toward the camp.

"Certainly." he replied. "And don't fret too much. I'm sure we'll find Jake, he's probably just trapped in a net somewhere. It's not like anyone could get lost this close to the beach."
