Jungle outskirts leading in from the fuselage beach area. The survivors first enter this area in day 3. Location found in box G3 below: Each box is 3 miles by 3 miles. It takes an hour to walk 3 miles. But also keep in mind that hiking (like that really steep hill to get to higher ground) will take a heck of a lot longer and that if you're running (like from some jungle thing), that you'll get somewhere faster.

For the first time, I was going to head into the jungle on a trek alone. But I ignored the fear, concentrating on the fact that I'd be meeting up again with the group so I wouldn't be alone for too long. Plus the fact that we hadn't seen or heard anything from whatever was living in here helped me to temporarily forget of its existence. I listened to the calming sounds of the jungle and hummed quietly to myself as I walked along, heading deeper in at a diagonal direction toward where I thought the water trekking group would be.

Vincent sniffed at the air before turning his attention to the trees around him, turning his head as the wind blew in from a different direction. There was an unusual smell to this place. It was focused on a precise area but yet its odour was remarkably pungent, rotten even. It reminded him somehow of the clairvoyant child's mother's cooking, the sort of rotten offerings fit only for that black bag lined plastic contraption which Vincent had so enjoyed overturning. But this was different. Something was wrong. He turned, hearing someone behind him, and ran back the way had come, only stopping when he was right in front of the strange humming lady.

I came to a dead stop when I heard the rustling in the foliage and gave a sigh of relief when Vincent appeared. "Oh, hey there, Vincent," I said, as I leaned down and scratched behind his ear. "What are you doing out here?" I looked around, wondering if Walt was also nearby but most likely not. He was probably on the beach with Michael. "You're just out here alone again, exploring, huh? Very brave of you." Or not very smart of him. Then again, dogs weren't usually known to be smart animals.

Vincent turned his head to one side; the strange humming lady did not seem to understand. Something was wrong. He barked, hoping to convey the urgency of the matter at hand, turned and ran back the way he had come, pausing to turn and look back at her. If she was as perceptive as he hoped, she would now begin to understand.

I recognized his actions. He wanted me to follow him. "What's wrong? Did Timmy fall down the well?" I joked but Vincent continued to just stare and wait. I looked in the direction I was supposed to be heading and then back to Vincent, trying to figure out what I should do. I'd get off track if I followed him but then what if someone really was hurt? Should I run back and get someone else? But then Vincent might not be around to show the way again or may have lost interest in what he was trying to show me. "Dammit," I muttered under my breath as I walked toward Vincent. "Okay boy, what is it you wanna show me?"

Although he had no way of knowing exactly what the humming lady had just said, Vincent felt sure that he now had her attention. He turned his nose to the air and bounded off into the trees, heading in the direction of that unusual scent. It grew stronger and stronger with each step he took until, not a minute later, he located its source. A body lay beside one of the many trees; a dark haired female whose clothing smelt strongly of blood. He moved closer and sniffed cautiously - whoever she was, she must have been dead for several days now.

"Slow down, will ya?" I said as I walked fast after him, dodging and pushing branches out of the way. The smell of something very bad was growing which in turn caused a growing dread. My steps slowed but I couldn't stop myself from continuing on. I didn't know how to describe the smell, but it was worse than anything I've ever experienced before. I stopped as I walked through a small clearing where Vincent sniffed at something on the ground. The horrid smell caused me to start coughing and I pulled the collar of my shirt over my nose. "What is that? A dead animal?" From my position farther back, I tried to see what Vincent was fussing over.

Vincent heard the humming lady say something; he aside slightly and looked from the body to her, sensing that she may finally be starting to understand the nature of his find.

I wanted to believe that it was just an animal but my gut was telling me it wasn't. When Vincent moved, I was able to see that my gut had been right. There on the jungle floor lay the corpse of a woman. The image of a seven-day old corpse rotting in the jungle was not something I would have ever guessed I'd see in my life and now the image was burned into my memory.
I felt the blood leave my head and my stomach turn as I backed away quickly. Not very smart on my part to make any sudden moves under those conditions, especially in an unfamiliar part of a jungle. My heel caught on a vine and I found myself falling back. Thankfully, the jungle terrain and the backpack full of empty water bottles helped to cushion my fall. It was enough to knock me out of my stupor but I wasn't ready to get back to reality just yet. I sat up Indian style and rested my forehead on the palms of my hands, closing my eyes and slowly rocked back and forth as I allowed the defense mechanism of shock to cloud over my mind.

Vincent could sense that the strange humming lady was in a state of considerable distress. It was hardly surprising, afterall; his own senses had burst aflame at the sight of what lay before them, the shadow of what had once been human, the tragedy of a life taken long before its time. He had seen death before, but never of the human variety. He padded forward and placed his head on the humming lady's knee, looking up at her in an attempt to convey his understanding.

I stopped rocking and lowered my hands as I felt a weight settle on my knee. The sight of Vincent looking up at me with such a forelorn expression made the corners of my mouth turn slightly up into a smile. I sat quietly for a little as I scratched Vincent behind the ear. After a few minutes, I took a breath and let it out slowly and tried to get my mind back in order as I looked at my surroundings. I had to find the water group and I really didn't know where I was.
I tried to find the direction I had come from. I could always try to go back that way but if I didn't hit the angle exactly right, who knows where I'd end up. I was sure the spot I currently stared at was where I'd emerged from but wasn't ready to bet on it. Afterall, I was the person who could get lost on a one way street and I'd long ago lost count of how many times I've gotten lsot while driving. That was the reason I'd gotten a GPS system but not even one of those could help me on this island.
I dragged the backpack full of empty water bottles to my side and checked it over. A couple of them had been broken due to my fall. Taking out one of the broken ones, I looked at Vincent and thought, What the hell, I'll ask him. "Vincent, you've been wanderin' around this jungle. Can you take me to the caves with water?" I was pretty sure he didn't understand me so I held out the water bottle and tapped it. "Water. Can you take me to water?"

Vincent had no idea what the strange humming lady was saying, but the transparent liquid she produced seemed instantly familiar. He moved forward for a closer inspection and recognised it as the cool, tasteless liquid poured into his bowl by the clairvoyant child's mother. He looked up the strange humming lady. She appeared to be refering to it as 'Walter'. This confused him somewhat. How, he wondered, did she suppose the clairvoyant child had got inside the bottle? Then it struck him - perhaps she wanted to know where to find this 'Walter'? Remembering that he had seen a large supply of it not far away, Vincent turned and headed in the desired direction.

I gave a shaky sigh of relief at getting through to Vincent and quickly zipped up the backpack and slung it over my shoulders as I stood up and followed him deeper into the jungle.
