He raised his eyebrow slightly as she moved closer, pleased that she at least felt he could help protect her.
"Hope I didn't ruin your kids fun," he said, with a grunt. "You should be careful, out here, you know?"
He sighed, irritated they'd been interrupted. "Nah, it's OK. Same to you."

I let out the breath I didn't know I'd been holding when the older man came into view. "We were just collecting firewood," I added in case he was getting the wrong idea but realized it had been unnecessary to explain myself when it was obvious since I had an armful of branches. I tried to smooth it over. "They're burning the fuselage tonight. And thanks for your concern," I added with a friendly smile.

"We weren't having fun. Well, yeah, we were having fun, but not that kind of fun. Not that I'm thinking about that kind of fun or anything." he said quickly as Heidi explained why they were out there, making him realize the old man might have gotten the wrong idea.

He was laying it on a bit thick which almost made us sound guilty of something. I discreetly elbowed him in the side as I began moving toward the pile of wood. "I'm gonna continue working, if ya'll don't mind." I gave the old guy another smile and kept looking back to them to show that I wasn't walking away from the conversation; just working while we continued the conversation.

"I'm gonna continue working, if ya'll don't mind."
"Yeah, I'd better get helping too. Chances are someone might see the fuselage if it goes up in flames." he said, agreeing quickly.

WALTER The old man got a crotchity smile on his face--perhaps the only time he would do so on the island. It quickly faded as he looked at the two, and shook his head.
"No reason to get all defenseive," he said, begining to move down the path. "I didn't mean anything by it at all. You're young kids and you should be allowed to have whatever fun you see fit. Just, uhm, be careful, there's something not right about these woods here."

He nodded in agreement as he broke down more, thicker branches. "You got that right."

Walter threw a large branch he had been using as a walking stick to Cyrus, and walked off, without saying anything.

He grabbed the stick, adding it to the bundle he had under his arm. "Sorry if I embarrassed you or something. And I'm not thinking about...that, at all, really."

"No need to apologize, I think we managed to equally make asses of ourselves. And I thought you boys always had 'that' on your mind," I teased. "I liked him," I said with a nod in the direction the older man had disappeared into. "Reminded me of my grandpa, all rough and gruff on the outside, very strict." I smiled to myself as memories flitted through my mind. I continued after a few quiet moments. "But underneath it all, he had a good heart and he learned to loosen up after a while. Turned out he had a great sense of humor. I've heard stories of how he was. Not an easy man to live with and he made his fair share of mistakes. Funny how people can change so much." Talking about him reminded me of the last time I'd seen him and my smile slowly faded as I got lost in the memory.

He laughed slightly. "Well, maybe....or it could be just me."

"My Dad was pretty rough and gruff...kinda strict too." he replied, and tried to banish the memory of Eugene. "Everyone makes mistake, I just try not to make the same mistake twice. Although I usually end up making the same mistake about eight times in a row..."

"Eight times? That's too bad," I said with a little laugh. He was most likely exagerating. "It usually takes just one time for me to learn, then I usually avoid the situations I had problems with."
I looked at the big pile we've collected. "I think this is good for now. This'll take us several trips to carry back. Maybe we can get some more people to help."

"Sure, sounds right and shiny to me, boss." he said with a smile. "Let's get going, Ms Woodchuck."

I gave him a mock annoyed look at his jest then smiled as I started picking up as much firewood as I could hold. "Less talking, more working, slave!"

It was almost to much ... Sarah felt how her legs kept getting weaker. She was close to fall a couple of times. Her arms reflexively reaching out to get a grip on sth and keep her from stumbling. She didn't know for how long she would be able to do that, to move forward, without even seeing anything anymore. It was just plane dark. Sarah stopped ... now it was enough. She was just about to lay down, ready to take whatever fate was holding in advance for her, even death. Sarah was holding onto a bamboo trunk with her whole balance with this one hand, leaning against the wood. She looked on the was in front of her one last time, ready to just fall down, but then she saw something: A slight glimming through the trees in front of her. About 100 yards away. Sarah brushed her eyes but the light was still there. Noises seem to evolve in her ears but she was not sure if she was just hearing things. "Mum? Dad?" she tried to yell but her throat was dry and raw. A slight spark of energy lightened her muscles and bones as she moved a few slow steps forward. "Aaron come on, we found them!" she said but no one was there. It didn't seem to count for her, in her mind he was. Sarah moved forward to wards the beach. Slowly stumbling but constantly approaching.
