After waking up alone and for a brief moment wondering what Goodwin might be doing right now, Juliet decided to focus on breakfast and take the rest of the day one surreal moment at a time. She poured herself a glass of orange juice and sliced a bagel in half, generously spreading a layer of Dharma cream cheese over the bread.
She'd spent the remainder of the day before secluded in her house, cleaning up the mess from the book club meeting and the disruption of the plane crash. There was something oddly calming about the routine of it. Having a purpose that was clear and easily understood. She still didn't understand why Ben had shown her the satellite video of her sister. Was he expecting her to reconsider? To renew her commitment to a cause that had imprisoned her for the last three years?
No, she would wait. She would be compliant with his plans for the crash survivors. Because they were outsiders. Intruders into his perfect world. A variable that he couldn't control, try as he might. And when he was weak, overwhelmed by the situation and his debilitating tumor, she would find a way out.

She placed the plate and glass into the sink, glancing up to look out the window at her backyard and wondering what might be going on out there. How everyone was dealing with the consequences of the plane crash, and how Ben was mobilizing his people to assess and analyze their newfound situation.
"Juliet, are you there?"
She turned when she heard a knock. Seemed like she was about to find out. Wiping her hands off on a nearby tea towel, she went to answer the door. "Ah, Ben," she said, giving him a half-hearted smile. "How can I help you? No, wait, let me rephrase: what are you planning to hold over my head today in order to force me to help you?"

"How can I help you? No, wait, let me rephrase: what are you planning to hold over my head today in order to force me to help you?"
"Very witty, Juliet. And I'm simply requiring a favour of you." he replied tonelessly. "Quite a large problem has come up."

"And what makes you think I can help you with this problem, Ben?"
"Well, for one, you and my problem could bond over your shared hatred of me." he said, moving past her. "A woman named Samantha Harkness. She's a survivor who made it all the way from the cockpit to Preston Saint's backgarden. He entertained her for a brief period and she's currently being held in the Staff. I'd rather she remained with you for the night."
He turned back to her. "Care to babysit?"

"Care to babysit?"
She listened with rapt attention as Ben explained the situation to her. "There was a survivor? A woman?," she repeated in disbelief. "And she's here on the premises?"
But she soon realized her words weren't answered Ben's questions. And better to have her here than Saint's house or the blank sterile walls of the station. "Of course," she quickly nodded. "She's welcome to stay here."

"Of course, She's welcome to stay here."
A little surprised at how quickly she'd agreed, he nodded with approval. "Good. I'll have Pryce bring her up now." He turned for the door. "Remember to keep a close watch on her at all times. And thank you, Juliet."

"Remember to keep a close watch on her at all times. And thank you, Juliet."
"I just want to see my sister again, Ben. And if looking after one of your new lab rats will make that happen, then I'm happy to do it," she said simply.

"You'll see her again." he said, turning back to the beautiful blonde. "I promise you, and I'm going to keep that promise."
He paused for a moment, just looking at her. "Well, goodbye for now, Juliet."

She stood hovering over the kitchen sink, drinking her coffee and lightly massaging the back of her neck. It was aching a bit from having slept on the couch, but she thought it best to allow Samantha to sleep in the bedroom. To let the reluctant prisoner console herself with a locked door, a hot shower and a closet full of fresh clothes. She noticed Ryan wandering the courtyard and wondered when Ben would decide what their next step was. By now, people would be wondering, conjecturing, making assumptions. Ben would have to ease their minds. Strangers were on their island, the blood of their neighbors had been shed by the newcomers--they'd all want to know what Ben was planning to do about that.

SAMANTHA
Samantha curled an arm around the pillow, stirring slowly from a deep sleep she'd needed all too badly. She nuzzled her face into the soft fabric, half still lost in dreams where she had no cares or worries and where a certain Hawaiian surfer called her name and made her feel safe.
As her eyelids fluttered open, reality came slowly back into focus and although she had woken in a strange room (something not all that unusual for such a frequent traveller) it was the chair propped under the bedroom door handle that startled her into sitting upright.
Why have I barricaded myself in? In fact, this isn't a hotel...where...?
And then it dawned on her. The flight, the crash, the incident with Preston, the taser, the waking up in a disused building, the questioning, the examination, the woman. Juliet. She was in Juliet's house. And even if she had been given a safe room to sleep in and a change of clothes (which she had slept in in case she needed to make a quick escape), the windows and doors were still locked which meant she was still a prisoner.
"Bugger."
She tossed the covers back and went to listen at the door, wondering if Juliet was doing the same on the other side. Or if Juliet was even awake. As quietly as she could, she removed the chair she'd braced the door with and tried the handle. Locked. Naturally. It would be foolish of them, if they wanted to keep her from running away, to have left it open. And what little she'd managed to learn from them, she definately knew they were smarter than they pretended to be. Except maybe Ryan.
Thinking of him made her automatically touch her jaw where he'd smacked her yesterday. She winced when her fingertips brushed the now blossoming bruise. Yes, thank you Ryan. Let's hope we don't run into you again today. With a sigh, she decided that it was time to face whatever today was going to throw at her, knocking on the door loudly enough to wake Juliet should she still be sleeping.
"Hello?"

"Hello?"
The sound of Samantha's voice and the knocking drew her attention away from the window. She removed the key from around her neck and unlocked the door, opening it and giving her guest a warm smile. "Morning. I hope you slept well; I'm sure you were exhausted," she said, stepping away from the door and back over to the sink. "There's coffee, if you want. Milk, juice...I might have some tea. Though it's probably not the sort you're used to. And if you're hungry, there's bagels, cereal, basically anything that doesn't involve cooking. I think you've been through enough without having to suffer that as well," she added.

SAMANTHA
If the last two days hadn't happened, Samantha would have thought herself a guest of some cosy little B&B out in the country from the reception Juliet was giving her. But the last two days had happened, which just made the whole breakfast buffet offer seem bizarre.
"I slept fine, thank you, and tea would be lovely." She smiled politely as she exited the bedroom. No need to be rude right now. Juliet hadn't done anything to warrant it. Yet.
Naturally, Samantha was still unsettled by the fact she was being held against her will, but co-operation had gotten her better results and treatment than being difficult. Which had, in fact, just made things worse.
"And to be perfectly honest, I'm so hungry I could eat a bear, but i'll settle for a bagel. Bears are hard to come by on desert islands."

Juliet turned away to retrieve the tea kettle, hiding her ironic smile. Actually, she knew of at least two bears on the island, but it was probably best not to share that with Samantha. She filled the kettle with water, placing it on the stove, and while it was boiling, she removed a bagel from its plastic wrapper.
"I don't have much in the way of bagel toppings," she said, slicing the bread in half and tossing it onto a plate. "Butter, plain cream cheese, strawberry jam...."

SAMANTHA
"What, no marmalade? Perhaps I should have stayed at another hotel." Samantha quipped, finding it hard to not be sarcastic. "Strawberry jam would be lovely." She added pleasantly. No provoking today. Just bide your time and figure out what's going on.
