WALT
Walt sat on the beach staring at Jin who was sitting on the sand nearby, his hand still handcuffed to the plane. Jin stared back at Walt. The two stared at each other - neither saying a word. Walt saw Sun walking back to Jin.
MICHAEL
Something was missing, but what was it? Walt's voice. Walt always seemed to be bursting with questions and discoveries and at the moment, the constant stream of his voice was gone. Michael looked to Walt and then to what had his attention.
Michael defensively stood up and took and step toward Jin. "Hey, what are you doing?"
Michael gave a brief glance to Walt who had turned to look back and up at Michael. Michael walked over to Walt then looked at Jin, his eyebrows drawn together in anger. "You say something to my boy?"
SUN
Startled by the accusing tone in Michael's voice, Sun turned and looked at him, her expression pleading him to not start something with her ill tempered husband who was currently defenseless but Michael didn't spare her a glance.
MICHAEL
Jin began to speak to him in Korean. He didn't know what the man was saying but the way he seemed to be spitting the words at him made it clear it was not friendly.
Michael held out a protective arm in front of Walt as Walt stood up and looked from Jin and Sun to him. Sun also straightened
up and looked over at Michael.
"Yeah, nice talking to you, too. Let's move it, Walt." With his hand on Walt's shoulder, Michael led Walt away. Walt stared at Jin and Sun. Sun watched them go.
WALT
"How come he doesn't like us?"
MICHAEL
And the stream of his voice fueled by curiosity started up again. "What?" he asked, partly distracted and partly not sure what Walt meant.
WALT
"You said people like him don't like people like us."
MICHAEL
Questions about racial topics were not easy. Michael groaned at having to explain something that a parent hoped their kid would never deal with. "Oh, man."
Michael stopped walking and faced Walt. "No, uh ... look, that's -- that's not true, and you know what? I don't think like that anyway. I was -- I was angry." Not a very strong argument so he was not surprised that Walt's curiosity hadn't been appeased.
WALT
That much was obvious to Walt, but, "What'd you do to him?"
MICHAEL
"What did I do to him?" he echoed back. Now there was a damn good question. "You tell me. I've been with you since we crashed. Have you seen me do anything to anyone? What kind of man do you think I am anyway?" Walt's silence caused a small panic in Michael. "What did your mother say about me?"
WALT
He shrugged. "She never talked about you."
MICHAEL
It felt like a punch in the gut. He wondered if that hurt more than if he'd found out Walt had heard nothing but bad about him. "You don't know anything about me then, do you?"
WALT
"You don't know anything about me," he countered.
MICHAEL
Michael quickly game to his own defense. He'd made it his business to learn as much as he could about his son throughout the years. "I know a lot about you."
WALT
"Yeah? When's my birthday?" he challenged.
MICHAEL
Without any hesitation, he answered, "August 24th. When's mine?"
He saw the surprise on Walt's face before the kid looked down at his toes as if shamed. That wasn't fair and Michael knew it. It wasn't Walt's fault. He shook his head and said, "Forget it. Come on, man."
They continued to walk away, Michael with a slight limp from his earlier fight with Jin.
SUN
Sun watched Michael and Walt's interraction as they walked away. "Honey, please..." she pleaded in Korean as she knelt down in front of Jin, "... just let me go and explain this to them.
Maybe they'll let you go."
JIN
Holding strong to his stubborn nature, he answered, "How will you explain? Your place is by my side and we will not explain ourselves to a thief." He stared at her as Sun kept her gaze down in shame and Jin hated himself for making her feel such a way.
