Shane (Jason Ritter)
Seth (Garrett Hedlund)
****FLASHBACK**** Year: 1999
Jamie finished cleaning the carpet and placed the vacuum cleaner in its closet. She took a bottle of water, went to the television room, and plopped down in the middle of the floor, turning on the television. For a few moments, it was a very calm, peaceful atmosphere; just the sound of the television, Jamie, and a drink.
“Enjoying ourselves?” a voice called from the doorway.
Jamie turned around. “Seth, its homecoming; your senior homecoming. You can’t miss it.”
“Yes, I can and I fully intend to do so.”
“You’re crazy. You’re missing your senior prom.”
“And you’re ignoring the fact that it’s your 16th birthday.”
Silence took over the air, except for the white noise of the television.
“So what?”
“Jamie, it’s your birthday; your sweet sixteen. Doesn’t that matter?”
“Not really.”
“Well, it matters to me, and I’m not letting you be alone; and as my first act as the celebrator of your 16th birthday, I’ve got a gift for you.”
Seth produced a box from behind his back and placed it in Jamie’s hands. Jamie looked at Seth, then at the box.
“Open it.”
Carefully, Jamie lifted the lid and sat it on the floor. Inside was a delicate silver colored bracelet and matching, small chained necklace with a single charm on it. First, Jamie raised the bracelet into the air, examining every detail; there wasn’t a chain to it, and on the bracelet was engraved the word “Jamie”. Then, she looked at the necklace; it had a very small chain to it, with the single charm being a small, delicate, silver butterfly. This butterfly was the most elaborate thing Jamie had ever seen; the butterfly’s wings were spread, as if it were flying across her body or in front of her; each wing was intricately patterned to simulate the effect of a real butterfly’s wing. The butterfly spun in circles on its chain.
“Turn around,” Seth told Jamie, taking the necklace into his hands.
Jamie did as she was instructed, lifting her hair up. Seth reached around her thin neck and hooked the clasp. Jamie let her hair cascade from its position as she turned around.
“You look beautiful,” Seth smiled at her.
“Thank you, Seth…for everything.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You remembered it was my birthday, you got me a gift…you even ditched your senior homecoming dance to spend the evening with me.”
“Put the bracelet on,” Seth said after a pause. Jamie slipped it on to her wrist, her name showing on the front, and then Seth continued. “I would dream of anything less for my favorite person in the world.”
Jamie smiled at him. “Your ‘favorite person in the world’?”
Seth scooted closer to her. “You know, Jamie…we’re only foster siblings…that doesn’t actually mean we’re related…” Jamie shot Seth a confused look. Without hesitation, Seth leaned to Jamie, his lips touching hers softly and briefly. “Jamie,” Seth looked into her eyes, “I…always meant to tell you…” Jamie watched Seth, even more confusion filling her eyes. Seth whispered, “I love you.” At that time, there was a silence so loud; it was heard around the world. Seth took the side of her face into his hand and kissed her.
There have been many kisses throughout history, but never was there one with so much passion, so much love, so much ardor combined into one moment, one kiss, that it topped all of the greatest kisses through time. Finally, Seth had been able to reveal his infatuation…possibly even his obsession, to this young woman. After that passion filled moment, Seth parted, knowing that now their lives would be so much more awkward. Jamie opened her eyes, staring deeply into Seth’s blue eyes.
“Seth…” she whispered, leaning in, not allowing the moment to go away, in all its ardor and glory.
The two kissed again, and again, the love in the moment growing larger and much more intense; they would whisper the other’s name in the event of a brief parting for breath. Seth had planned the timing so well; her birthday, revealing his affection, the romance of the moment. Suddenly, a knock came at the front door; they broke apart within a heartbeat. The knocking came again.
“Who the hell is that?” Seth asked.
Jamie began to get up. “Damn it Shane…”
Seth kissed her before she walked out of the room; Jamie peered through the hole in the doorway and opened it. Shane took a step into the home and shut the door.
“Shane…”
“Jamie, who was that you were kissing?” Shane asked.
“Shane, you need to give me a moment…”
“I’m only protecting my little sister, Jamie, now who were you kissing?”
Jamie took a deep breath and whispered, “Seth.”
Shane leaned towards her. “Wait, your foster brother?”
“Yes.”
Seth stepped up behind Jamie. “Hey Shane.”
Shane nodded to Seth. “Listen, I’d like a word alone with my baby sister.”
Seth returned to the television room. Shane looked Jamie in the eyes. “Jamie, what’s going on?”
“Shane, I don’t know what…”
“Jamie, you’re kissing your foster brother!”
“Shane, it’s not like we’re…”
“Jamie, you can’t do that.”
“Shane!”
“What?”
“Just let me say something!”
“All right, all right; go ahead, Jamie.”
“Seth and I aren’t even related, especially like we are. And…and…”
Jamie burst into tears, gently holding the butterfly in her hand.
“Jamie…Jamie…” Shane said, pulling her close, hugging her and comforting her. “Jamie…Jamie, I’m sorry…sis…hey, don’t cry…I’m stupid, Jamie…don’t listen to me…”
Upon hearing the sound, Seth came to the entry way and looked from Shane to Jamie. Shane gave Seth a look that said I-don’t-know-what-the-hell-is-going-on. Seth came up and took Shane’s place. Jamie’s head rested on his chest while Seth whispered comforts to her.
“It’s okay Jamie, it’s all right,” Seth assured her in a low tone.
After a few minutes, Jamie’s sobs subsided; Seth continued to hold her, comfort her, and make sure she was all right. Shane looked at Jamie.
“Hey, don’t listen to me. I’m an idiot,” Shane looked around, especially outside the door, “I need to get out of here before the rents get back; you know they hate me.” Shane and Jamie hugged. “If you ever need me, just call me. I’ll come from Santa Barbara in a heartbeat.”
Shane opened the door and left; Seth locked it behind him, went to Jamie, and held her by the elbows.
“Are you sure you’re all right?”
Jamie nodded, “Yeah, just had kind of a tough moment.” She looked around. “When do the rest of them get back?”
Seth shook his head. “Alice…she’ll be back in the morning.” Jamie looked at him questioningly. “She went to the dance with her boyfriend; this is Alice we’re talking about. And my parents…three a.m. at the earliest.”
Jamie stepped to Seth and kissed him; he led her back to the television room.
