ADAM
He coughed loudly, entering Juliet's house. "Where's Ben today? He's usually here first."

"Not to diminish your enthusiasm at all, but maybe Karli shouldn't have been your first test subject," she observed. "It was probably easier for Columbus to find a route to the East Indies than to get her to change her decor. You know how particular she is about her home. Plus, this place is all about equality and conformity, in case you didn't get the memo."
"No ..." Aarom answered in thoughts. "... I think that one went lost with the memo about Karli not being in for changes of any kind." He added with no decernable emotion. Then Juliet went for the door.
"Adam, glad you could join us," she greeted, holding the door open. "Please come in, have a seat. Aaron's just helping me get things together in the kitchen."
"Adam, hey!" Aaron greeted through the walls from the kitchen. Then, as Juliett came beack she found him leaning against the counter trying one of the burnt muffins. "Well ..." he mumbled with his mouth full. "... they suck, sorry!" With a excuseing smile he spit the brunt stuff on a paper napkin and threw it in the trash bin. "Now I would really apprechiate something to drink that has a very strong flavour and a tainting effect on this taste your muffins gave me!" he chuckled.

Preston Saint was deeply worried. There was no telling how this would go. For example, what if they didn't like him? A new-comer to their little book club? Amelia had invited him along, true, but what if they still viewed him as a stranger, alien to them?
Just about everyone knew his name. After all, he was the physician, and a very young one at that. He gave each and every member of their community a check-up, and also a thorough physical exam. Maybe that's why they didn't like him. He was a doctor, and not one with a terribly good bed-side manner either.
Then, perhaps it was a simple case of all his education and home problems preventing him from being able to interact well.
"Preston, you looked worried. Please don't, dear. This will be absolutely fine. You're a nice boy, but people just see you as 'the doctor' and that's it." explained Amelia as she walked with him up the steps of Juliet's house. Juliet, the blonde Goddess. Of course, he barely spoke to her. He barely spoke to anyone except for a selection of three friends. Amelia, Ben, and Alex. And he was pretty certain Ben didn't like him. It didn't matter, though, Preston liked Ben well enough.
"I'm not a socially awkward teenager, Amelia, I know how to act around people, I just....prefer my privacy most of the time." The truth was, on the island, privacy was easy to get. That's what Preston thought he wanted. Of course, by this point, he'd learned to be lonely.
"Oh, I know you do, Preston. But you don't need to think about yourself all the time, all right?" Amelia said with a slow smile. She glanced down wards."Oh, Preston. Shoelaces."
He immediately bent down as Amelia knocked on the door, tying his laces tightly. Maybe Amelia was right. Perhaps it was some unintentional selfishness that alienated everyone else.
AMELIA
She glanced down at Preston as she waited for Juliet to answer. Forgetful boy. Smart, but detached. Something she intended to help him with.

"Where's Ben today? He's usually here first."
"I'm not sure if Ben will be joining us today," she answered Adam nonchalantly. True, most people around the village might have guessed that Ben and Juliet had recently had a falling-out; they weren't blind or deaf. But they didn't need to know the details.
"I think he's been very busy with a new project over at the Hydra," she added, hoping that would deter any further questions.
"Well...they suck, sorry! Now I would really apprechiate something to drink that has a very strong flavour and a tainting effect on this taste your muffins gave me!"
"Well, I would have thought your keen sense of observation would have told you they were inedible," she retorted. Aaron was one of the few people who dared to be openly insubordinate to the village leadership, and as such she felt a sort of kinship with him. Even moreso in recent days. One could be fairly candid with him without fear of reprisal, and for that she was grateful.
"Is iced tea okay?" she asked, obtaining a glass from a cabinet and a handful of ice cubes from the freezer. She took the pitcher out of the refrigerator and placed it on the counter, interrupted by another knock at the door.
Passing Adam who was giving her CD rack a condescending once-over, she opened the door to greet an older woman and a young man stooped down on her front porch. "Amelia, hello!" she greeted. "And I see you've managed to convince the doctor to join us?" she asked, recognizing Preston once he'd stood up.

"Is iced tea okay?"
"You've read my mind sweetheart!" Aaron cheered taking a huge and intentionally manly sip of the cold drink. Then he slowly made his way up front where all the people were gathering for the book club now. He recognized the two people Juliett had opened the door for now. "Hey Preston! I did do the step-workout you told me about, the one that would improve my butt problem ... erm ... back problem! Never mind!" With a slightly embarrassed wink of his arm he mad his way to the place his Steven King novel has courageously occupied for him.

AMELIA
"Amelia, hello!"
She smiled and hugged Juliet lightly. After all, she'd had a rough time lately. "Hello, Juliet."
"And I see you've managed to convince the doctor to join us?"
"Yes, I convinced Preston to put down his books for just long enough to openly discuss one." she smiled, looking from Juliet to the doctor.
PRESTON
She smiled at Juliet for a few seconds, and then realized he should probably say something. "Oh, hi, yeah, hi, Juliet." he said, awkwardly trying to shake her hand. "And, uh, I haven't read the book, but I saw the first half of the movie. It was really good, it was."
"Hey Preston! I did do the step-workout you told me about, the one that would improve my butt problem ... erm ... back problem! Never mind!"
"Oh, good. Good, that should work." he nodded.

"Oh, don't worry about it, Preston. I'm just glad you could join us," she said, hoping to allay his concerns. "And it's only on rare occasions that we actually discuss the book selection. Usually we get distracted by other, more important topics like everyone's respective dinner plans or who's currently winning the backgammon tournament."
She ushered Amelia and Preston over to the living room. "Please have a seat," she offered. "What can I get you to drink?"

"What can I get you to drink?"
"Oh, just some tea, please." he asked, smiling and taking a seat across from Adam. His eyes travelled around the house, taking in every detail.

"Sure, I'll be right back," she nodded. "Same for you, Amelia? We'll give the others a few more minutes to arrive before we start." She headed back into the kitchen, leaving them to talk amongst themselves.

"Oh, yes please." smiled Amelia.
"I'll have coffee." instructed Adam.

"Don't forget the chips and the dip hun!" Aaron shouted after Juliet as she left for the kitchen. Then he pulled out the book from underneath his butt and made himself a little more comfortable. Not putting his legs on the coffee table was just all of it. "So ... who has actually read this crap? I mean on the movie you could at least see through her blood dripping dress which was cool in a weird way but in the book ... I scooped the final chapter ... nothing about her dress being see through. Although lil' Steve here is whining about her innermost emotions for 3 quarters of this tome. Not to mention the crappy writing." Aaron took a curious look around and was faced by mostly stunned faces. "Okay ... I think next time I read the book more thoroughly!"

Placing everyone's respective drinks on a tray, she shook her head, hearing Aaron's dissertation from the living room. Apparently he shared Ben's contempt for the book. Probably the only thing they agreed upon.
Adding sugar and cream to the tray in case anyone needed it, she returned to the living room and placed the tray on the coffee table which served as the center of their circle, distributing the drinks all around.
"I'll just go and get the chips 'n' dip, then," she said, with a smile to Aaron. "Amelia, would you mind giving me a hand in the kitchen?" she asked.

Aaron leaned back with a pleased smile nodding at Juliet. "I really like it around here!" he sighed relaxed. And he had to admit that Juliet an he always had a really warm and friendliy way around each other. Maybe it was because he knew he could not score with her and therefore was not trying to hit. Maybe she knew that and was relieved, once not to be the object of desire.

"Amelia, would you mind giving me a hand in the kitchen?"
"Of course." she said, smiling kindly and standing, heading into the kitchen with Juliet.
PRESTON
"I really like it around here!"
"It's a really nice home." he agreed, saying it loudly so Juliet would hear the compliment.

"It's a really nice home."
"Thank you, Preston; that's very kind," she said, before joining Amelia in the kitchen, saying a silent prayer that Adam and Aaron would play nice while the two women were gone.
Juliet gathered the chips as well as small serving bowls for the salsa and artichoke dip as she spoke to Amelia. "You just missed Sofia," she informed her. "And you can imagine how well that went."

"You just missed Sofia, And you can imagine how well that went."
She sighed deeply. "I wish I couldn't imagine." she replied. "What did she say? Oh, actually, I don't want to know. She's just jealous of you and that's all there is."

"Right, because I have so much to be jealous of," she remarked. "She came storming in here, demanding to know what it is I do around here, what makes me so special. And frankly, if she wants my job so badly, she's welcome to it," she shrugged.
"Thankfully, Tom intervened before she could really shift into sanctimonious mode."

"Perhaps a door lock is advised." she said, smiling sympathetically. "Well, it can't go on. Ben, or Bea or someone will have to talk to her. Let her know how things work around here, although she should know by now."

"I have a feeling Ben would be unwilling to do me any favors," she said. "Sofia is...enthusiastic. She's passionate. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I mean, look at Danny and Colleen. She just needs to...I dunno, find her place here and be content with it. I'm just not sure why that requires putting me in the crosshairs."

"Well, nevermind about her." said Amelia, with a dismissive wave of her hand. "And that temper of Danny's will get him in trouble someday, you just wait." Amelia moved to help with the cheese dip. "I hope you don't mind that I brought along Preston, I should've told you. He's just lonely, that's all."
