"Later." he said, walking out of her shelter.

Gwen tried to go back to reading but found the words kept blurring before her tired eyes. The daylight was steadily decreasing as well; it would be time to start gathering wood for the bonfires again. At any rate, her self-imposed few hours' rest was up. She decided to check in on Grace before returning to work mode.

***Ethan enters***
He was angry. At Sawyer, at Ana, at himself. Would he have killed Sawyer? Probably, and in front of an entire beach of people, that probably wasn't the best idea. Maybe if Sawyer was left alone he could-
No. You're not a killer, you've killed, doesn't mean you do it habitually to people you don't like.
Sawyer wasn't the concern anyway. He'd uncovered a much larger threat. Ana-Lucia. The scowling latino had leapt at him, probably knowing full well she could've come out of it as bad as Sawyer. But he hadn't expected her to smash into him with such force. But he knew several things about her. First of all, she took action and had little fear of the consequences. Secondly, she was most definitely a cop. Thirdly, she took every pre-caution and liked a means of control. Control was something very important to her.
He began to look through Gwen's things delicately, looking for the first aid kid.
All he had to do to control Ana-Lucia...was find whatever mattered to her more than being in charge. And threaten that.
Something that shone caught his way, and he reached underneath her pillow, retrieving it. A pair of wings. Interesting. But what-
The pilot. Her pilot friend. They must've been from him. Women kept their most treasured possessions beneath their pillow, men simply kept their pornography under their bed. He fiddled with the wings, flickering them in between his fingers. She clearly cared for the pilot, maybe even loved him. She was holding on. Still holding on, and that was natural. She'd let go, sooner or later. When she let go of the pilot, she would be adrift, and he would offer his hand.
He tucked it back beneath the pillow, and continued his search for the first aid kit.

***Gwen enters from Sawyer's Shelter***
"I suppose I don't have to tell you what a very stupid thing that was to do," she huffed, entering her shelter and brushing past him to retrieve the first aid kit, tossing her pillow aside and sitting down. She rifled through the kit trying to find anything useful. She'd also need towels and water.

"I suppose I don't have to tell you what a very stupid thing that was to do,"
"My nose is doing a pretty good job of reminding me so far." he said, unable to look at her, the guilt hitting him. He'd lied to her. What, did he think she wouldn't find out? He had gone there knowing full well Sawyer wouldn't go easy. Deep down, maybe he'd wanted a fight.

"I asked you not to waste your time on Sawyer, and you agreed," she reminded him, soaking a towel in water. "You told me you wouldn't go over there and try to obtain something from him yourself. And you certainly wouldn't pick a fight with him, because it's not like we haven't had enough of those already."
She began to clean the blood away from the cuts on his face, not all that worried about being gentle as too many thoughts were racing through her head. "And maybe this is all my fault. Maybe I did have this subconscious desire for someone to put Sawyer in his place. But you..." She paused and leveled her gaze at him. "You looked me in the eyes and you lied to me. How is that supposed to make me feel?"

"And maybe this is all my fault. Maybe I did have this subconscious desire for someone to put Sawyer in his place. But you..."
Was she blaming herself? Again?
The guilt was deepening quickly, and his gut twisted around in worry.
"You looked me in the eyes and you lied to me. How is that supposed to make me feel?"
"Remember...I think it was the late first, maybe second day...I promised you that you would see your family again. I have every intention of keeping that promise." He winced slightly as she dabbed his wounds. "If he had any equipment that could've helped, at all, I wanted to get it, to help, and...I am sorry." On those words, he looked up, looking at Gwen in the eyes. "I feel worse for lying to you than fighting Sawyer. Nothing good came out of it, and I realize I'm an enormous idiot. So yeah, I am sorry, Gwendolyn. No more fights, definitely no more lying. That's another one of my promises I intend to keep."

"So yeah, I am sorry, Gwendolyn. No more fights, definitely no more lying. That's another one of my promises I intend to keep."
"Yeah, you'd better, or I will let Ana break your arm next time," she retorted. For the time being, she stayed silent, letting her emotions settle. The sincerity in his eyes and the sorrow in his voice prompted her to believe him. She wanted to believe him. "I think that's the best I can do as far as cleaning those cuts. You might have to see Jack about stitches or something; they look fairly deep."
She moved on to the next step of disinfecting the wounds, which she knew would hurt more, and made a deliberate effort to be more gentle. "I'm just worried, okay? You could have been seriously hurt," she remarked. "And if a storm came along and destroyed my shelter, who'd be around to rebuild it?" she asked, giving him a weak smile.

"I'm just worried, okay? You could have been seriously hurt,"
He was a little pleased she seemed to be worried about his health. Sawyer wasn't a threat, but Ana had cop training. Jake was tall and well-built, he could be a problem. The doctor certainly looked powerful, but it was doubtful he had any experience. The beach...his enemies...were a collection of doctors and dentists. Not very many more.
"And if a storm came along and destroyed my shelter, who'd be around to rebuild it?"
He gave a little smile back. "I'm sure you'd manage to seduce some idiot into helping you." he replied, and then decided to test the waters a little, he cast his eyes downward a little. "Maybe Sayid."

"I'm sure you'd manage to seduce some idiot into helping you...Maybe Sayid."
She couldn't help the surprised look and short intake of breath at his comment. It was just a reflex. Was there no one on this island who wasn't speculating on her love life, or lack thereof? This wasn't a plane crash, it was a bloody reality show on Fox.
She shook her head quickly, not wishing to reveal her feelings to anyone else. "Are you calling Sayid an idiot?" she quipped. "I'm not sure he'd appreciate it. Besides, the man has better things to do than worry about me. And so do you, truth be told."
She finished up with the disinfectant and began to look for bandages. "The damsel in distress act doesn't really work for me, anyway. I'd much rather be able to take care of myself, if we're going to be stuck here for a while."

"I have all the time in the world. I'm on an island." he said. "And I'm not great with the technical stuff."
"The damsel in distress act doesn't really work for me, anyway. I'd much rather be able to take care of myself, if we're going to be stuck here for a while."
He paused for a moment. "I don't mind taking care of you." he said sincerely, with traces of affection in his voice. He quickly stood. "Well, now I have exciting new facial injuries, courtesy of Ana. She was a cop, most definitely, so...I didn't get beaten up by a girl, if that's what you're thinking."

"Oh, please! That is not what I was thinking," she insisted, making an effort to hurriedly pack up the first aid kit again. She stood up as well, but was still several inches from being level with him. "Ana's already confronted me once today. I know exactly what she's capable of. She gets in her head to come after you, and she won't stop until you've been declared public enemy number one," she rattled off, crossing her arms and looking downward.

"Half the beach saw me, I think she won't have to try too hard." he said. "Not that I care, they can think what they want. And what was she confronting you about? You haven't beat up Sawyer, at least not to my knowledge."

She raised her eyebrows. "Well, don't think I haven't been sorely tempted to wipe that smirk off his face," she replied. "But no, that wasn't it."
She awkwardly shifted her weight from one foot to another, unsure whether to explain the circumstances of her earlier encounter with Ana or even where to begin. "That day when we all returned from the cockpit--Charlie told you what happened, didn't he?" she asked.

"He told you what happened to the pilot?"
He looked downward for a moment, and then back up. "He told me he died, yes. He told me...that thing, in the forest that moves and bends the trees...it killed him."

"A slight understatement. But yes, that thing killed him," she admitted. "What Charlie left out is that before Eric...before the pilot was killed, he told us that the plane was off-course. We'd lost radio contact six hours into the flight, and then turned back for Fiji. And the only way to tell the rescue parties where to look for us is for Sayid to get the transceiver signal working.
"Ethan, I'm sorry I didn't tell you before. But we were all agreed that it was best not to share that information with the passengers; we didn't want to cause a panic. Yet somehow Ana found out and she was so angry with me. There was nothing I could say to justify my actions in her eyes. To her, I'm simply a liar and I've betrayed everyone."

It wasn't anything that affected him. He knew better. Even if by some miracle, the transciever began working again, no one in the world would get that signal or be able to see the island.
"The truth is subjective. You're not a liar, you haven't betrayed anyone, but I'm sure you know that already. To Ana, everything is in black and white. Sawyer is good-looking, therefore he's the good guy. I'm not, therefore I need cuffed. You didn't tell everyone that they may or may not be doomed, therefore, you're a bad girl." He took a step forward. "Ana doesn't understand the situation, and you do. It's that simple, and I don't blame you for keeping your secret. Besides, keeping that sort of secret is tough already. I'd do the same thing, and so would Ana, even if she doesn't think so now."

She pursed her lips, glad to know that she had someone else in her corner for the moment. "Mmm, I'm not sure I'd say I understand the situation. I'm just trying my best to keep everyone safe and not let them lose hope. I think Ana at least agreed with me on that point. Still, I don't think we'll be braiding each other's hair and sharing a pint of coffee ice cream anytime soon."
She relaxed her posture and stuffed her hands in her pockets. "And even if some people think Sawyer's good-looking, he's made it abundantly that he's not a good man. Not by any stretch of the imagination. People will learn who they can rely on around here. Just as I've done," she said, smiling up at him.
