Sawyer's Shelter Location found in box F3 below: Each box is 3 miles by 3 miles. It takes an hour to walk 3 miles. But also keep in mind that hiking (like that really steep hill to get to higher ground) will take a heck of a lot longer and that if you're running (like from some jungle thing), that you'll get somewhere faster.

SAWYER
Sawyer sat underneath a tree outside his shelter reading Watership Down. After the hike he left the group, not bothering to listen to what the others were going to say they'd found on their trip. Sawyer was still pretty irritated he'd lost his gun to Kate; he made a mental note to try and get it back soon. He focused on reading the story again, tuning out everybody and everything around him.

She strode hesitantly toward the Southerner, expecting hostility and evasion. Not expecting to see him reading in the shade. "Y'know, I'm guessing that this may be a silly question, but..." she began, "I dunno, I'm feeling optimistic. Did you have any electronic equipment that you wanted to contribute?"
Granted, this man had already picked a fight with Sayid and probably wasn't in a hurry to help him, but they'd been on the hike together and apparently managed not to maim one another. So she was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

He stopped his reading, annoyed that he'd been interrupted. The annoyance went away, however, when he saw the pretty British woman standing just so far away from him. He put on a charming smile and bent the corner of the page he was reading, setting the book aside. "I might and I might not," he replied. "What for?"

She felt a slight chill when he threw a brilliant smile at her. As if he was sure that, coupled with the dimples and deep blue eyes, would get him whatever he wanted. But this wasn't about what he wanted. "Sayid wants to give the transceiver signal another go, so I agreed to help gather some electronics for him and see if they might be of any use," she explained.
"Word has it you're sitting very pretty on your own private stash, Mr. Sawyer. I thought you might see fit to share at least one or two things for the benefit of the rest of us," she said, calmly and rationally. She wasn't asking all that much, anyway, and he'd get the items back once they were rescued. It was a perfectly reasonable request.

"Well, aren't you a good little Mary Poppins," he observed, still smiling. "As for me, I ain't so good. It's true I have my carpetbag of goodies, but what do I get if I hand over any electronics I might have?"

She shook her head and looked away. Mary Poppins? Well, at least he was honest about his lack of good intentions. Still, it was hard to tell if the loner lothario persona was just an act, or if he really was that reprehensible. Right--he was working on the barter system. And she had nothing to trade...
"Um, my gratitude?" she suggested. "The warm, fuzzy feeling of helping all the unfortunate souls around you? An extra ration of mangoes? Honestly, Mr. Sawyer, I don't think I have anything else you'd be interested in."
She tilted her head as an idea occurred to her. "Although, I do still have my flight attendant uniform..."

He raked his eyes up and down her body, then looked her square in the face with a cocksure grin. "Now, what, pray tell, would I want with your uniform?

So maybe it wasn't an act. But she'd swallow her pride and play along just a little bit longer, unswayed by that piercing gaze or that self-assured drawl.
"Oh, I dunno, it might look a little ridiculous on you," she mused as she knelt in the sand beside him, responding to his insultingly obvious survey by letting her own eyes wander over his chest and shoulders and lingering on his lips. "I mean, I always did find it a bit binding, and in this heat...well, I simply couldn't stand to wear it for long," she exhaled.

"Is that right?" He was liking this innuendo game. "In exchange for the electronics, we could see if you really are 'practically perfect in every way,'" he negotiated, blatantly staring at her breasts.

She laughed slightly, hoping it would cover up any sign of her urge to slap him right then and there. Clearly, nothing short of a strip tease in her uniform would get her what she'd originally came for, so she decided to change tack and see if she could obtain a different piece of information.
"Well, you know what they say--a spoonful of sugar helps the...being hopelessly stranded on an island go down easier," she said with a warm smile. "That, or a fifth of vodka. I can never remember how it goes..."
She glanced out at the waves before shrugging nonchalantly. "Actually, sod the electronics," she began. "Sayid's already got more than enough to work with. And that's not the sort of thing we should be collecting anyway. Those things aren't important now. But you know what is."
She lowered her head a fraction so that she was looking up at him with vulnerable eyes. He wanted the power so badly, she'd give it to him. Temporarily. "You know what people need, Sawyer. What they want. So why don't you be a dear and tell me where you've hidden the alcohol, hmm?" she purred.

She was trying to get under his skin, he could tell. It wouldn't work. "Then I wouldn't have the monopoly on the goods and where would be the fun in that?" He leaned in closer, to the point where his lips were only a few inches from hers, and challenged, "If you really want to know where my stash is, you'd do better than the innocent, doe-eyed look."

She met his gaze defiantly but there were a million thoughts running through her head. And yet the only thing registering in her consciousness was how close he was. Mere inches. Or more like centimeters. So close that she could feel his breath on her skin. How did it get this far? She'd come here to ask a simple question, which she already knew the answer to, and now she was this close to him.
This selfish loud-mouthed redneck who wanted nothing more than to profit from their collective misery. It was ridiculous. Ridiculous that she should find it hard to catch her breath, that her heartbeat should speed up, that a wave of warmth should spread over her skin. He knew exactly what he was doing, but she wouldn't give him the satisfaction of seeing her flustered.
"No," she said quickly, turning away and scrambling to her feet to put as much distance between them as possible. "No, no, no, no, no. No," she stated, pointing a cautionary finger at him. "Oh, come on, Sawyer. Just be reasonable. Jack needs the alcohol for medical purposes; why do you need it? To lure lonely women back to your shelter? I mean, I think you've got the cocksure Cajun act down pat, which is more than enough for some of the women 'round here."

"Around here there's a little thing called the barter system; somethin' you want for somethin' I want," he gestured between himself and Gwen. "So maybe when I get an offer that's worth the goods, then we'll talk." He picked up his book again and opened it to the page he was on last, then watched Gwen to see what her next move would be.

She sighed and crossed her arms when he went back to his book. Summarily rejected and dismissed because she didn't have an 'offer worth the goods.' Maybe next time, she'd send Jinx as her envoy.
"Is this how you plan to play it?" she asked him. "Sad little king of a sad little hill? Alienating everyone, and yet expecting them to bow and scrape if they need something from you?"
She gave him her best concerned look. "It doesn't have to be like that. Yes, you've made it abundantly clear that you don't need any of us. But you went on the transceiver hike, so I'm guessing you're not quite as detached and uncaring as you want everyone to think you are. Sawyer, we need each other to get through this, and your list of friends seems to be dwindling..."

He sighed in annoyance. She was trying so hard to understand him and it was getting tedious. "Listen up sister, my list of friends is a list of one and always has been. So unless you got somethin' worth my time, I suggest you move on your merry way."

"Fine!" she snapped indignantly. As much as she wanted to show him compassion or at the very least avoid open hostility, it wasn't worth continuing to debase herself.
"You can just bite me, Sawyer," she said, turning to walk away. "And no, that was not an invitation," she added emphatically, calling back over her shoulder.

Bloody cheek. She swirled around to face him, still walking away. "Yeah, okay, Buh-bye," she recited with a practiced wave, then continued on her merry way just as he'd advised. "Wanker," she muttered, unsure where she was going but knowing it was anywhere away from him.
