Juliet suppressed a smile at Samantha's remark, placing a bandage on the woman's arm and claiming the blood sample from Preston. Oh, yes, Ben would enjoy having her around. A clearly uncontrollable variable bouncing around and breaking his perfect little world into pieces. Of course, that same rebellious spirit would make it more difficult for Juliet to keep her in check. But so far, she was the only person that Samantha seemed comfortable making even a few moments of eye contact with. Freely offering her home to their guest was simply another point in Juliet's favor.
Removing her scrubs, she turned back to Samantha. "We'll give you a chance to get dressed again. You can meet me outside in the hallway when you're ready; it's not that far back to the barracks. Preston?" she said, nodding toward the door as she tucked the blood sample and assorted paperwork into her bag.

She nodded. "Almost," she replied, waiting for Preston to finish collecting the blood sample. "Ben asked me to make room for you at my place. It's nothing fancy, probably doesn't look much different from Dr. Saint's home. But I can offer you a change of clothes and some semi-burnt muffins."

"What are you going to do with that?"
"We'll put it through a standard screen," she replied, holding a bandage at the ready for when Preston was done. "Check your iron levels, triglycerides, thyroid, any other factors that might be cause for concern."
She glanced around the room. "Unfortunately, this station isn't quite set up yet for a proper analysis. But I can take the sample directly to Karli; I'm sure she'd be glad to process it. Plus, it's a quick stop on the way to my house," she said casually.

"I had a bit of a headache after I crashed, but I think that was just from the sudden drop in altitude and a trip through a tree before landing. It didn't last long."
"Well, that's an encouraging sign," she smiled. "Preston, if you'd be kind enough to get a blood sample from Miss Harkness? Trust me, he's much better at this than I," she assured Samantha. "Then I can escort you back to the barracks where you can get some rest."

"And if only the rest of us could be so lucky," she remarked. "Heartbeat and respiration appear to be normal, by the way." She then shined the otoscope into Samantha's inner ears and then her eyes. "Since the crash, have you experienced any headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, acute pain? Symptons that weren't an aftereffect of the tranquilizers or tasers..."

"Ben's the one who asked that she be brought to the Staff; he's well-aware of the situation. And I'm sure he'll decide who asks her what and when. Our concern is in maintaining the health of a plane crash victim, not interrogation or threats."
As the young woman walked toward the door, she added, "Oh, and Sofia, if you ever burst into my exam room uninvited again, you will be on permanent rock-breaking duty at the Hydra. Is that understood?" If Sofia insisted on carelessly throwing around details within earshot of their new guest, she might as well drop a few more bread crumbs. Nothing too significant, just enough to be slightly disorienting.

"Perhaps you should try busting through a few more doors and maybe you'll find him," she remarked. "Now if we might be allowed to continue our examination of Miss Harkness in peace..."

Juliet tried to maintain her composure as Sofia burst in, gun and mouth blazing. Clearly, the girl had never learned the meaning of discretion. And every syllable she uttered would only serve to put Samantha further on the defensive. Especially now that Sofia had announced the presence of other survivors. Earning Samantha's trust and cooperation would be even more difficult now.
"The lack of interpersonal skills also applies to some of the women in our community," she remarked to Samantha, with a wry smile, leaving Preston to deal with Sofia's latest tantrum.
"Listen, I know we might not be the best of friends, but I wouldn't shake a gun around for no reason, you lot should be flattered that someone in the teams looking out for you both because no one else is!"
"Well seeing as trying to make amends isn't working with you Preston is there any other way I can assist?"
"Much as we appreciate your enthusiasm, Sofia, there are several other people working on preparing this hatch for receiving any other survivors. I assure you Preston and I are perfectly capable of handling this situation," she stated. "Why don't you go and ask Ryan what sort of help he needs?"

"Why is Ben so interested in whether I'm pregnant or not?"
"I apologize for the seeming lack of interpersonal skills in our community's male population," she replied, trying to work out a diplomatic answer to her question. Preston certainly be counted on for such a response.
"We merely ask out of concern for your health, Miss Harkness. Carrying an unborn child would mean certain adjustments in the way we treat our guests. From the food you eat to any medicines we might give you. We wouldn't wish to put your pregnancy at risk anymore than it already has been," she explained.

"Yes, Preston, I'm sure you'd be the picture of calm and serenity if your plane had just plummeted from the sky," she cautioned him. "Could you hand me one of the otoscopes, please?"
She released the pressure on Samantha's arm and unzipped the cuff, reciting, "132 over 98. A little higher than normal. But that dry British wit is certainly still intact." She placed the blood pressure cuff off to the side and then placed the stethoscope on Samantha's back. "Deep breaths," she requested, listening to her heart and lungs.

As Preston suspiciously scanned the room, she went about reassuring Samantha. "The first thing we want to do is check your vital signs," she explained, slipping the scrubs on over her shirt. "You have endured a plane crash and several days of isolation in unfamiliar terrain. That's bound to increase anyone's blood pressure."
She placed a stethoscope around her neck and removed the blood pressure monitor from the wall, slipping the black cuff around Samantha's upper left arm and securing it with the velcro. Then she placed the stethoscope on the inside of Samantha's elbow.

Juliet switched back into detached mode as she heard the doors swing open. "Thank you, Preston," she smiled at him, taking the gown and handing it to Samantha. "We'll give Miss Harkness some privacy to get changed, shall we?"

"Three weeks it is, then," she nodded. "And I assure you I'll do everything I can to protect you and your hypothetical baby. In the meantime, cooperation and compliance is probably your best course of action."

"You say that like you're a captive too?"
"I came here voluntarily. But that was a long time ago. A lot can change in three years," she responded.
"He asked me if I was currently pregnant..." Another pause. "I said yes."
She smiled at the woman. That would work just fine, for a time. "Then congratulations. How far along would you choose to tell me that you are?" she asked.

She let out a ponderous sigh. It was all very complex, and she didn't have time to think of the right words to sum up the situation. Preston could return at any moment.
"He asked whether or not you were pregnant, right?" she asked. "If you're not, and I do a blood test which confirms that fact--no harm, no foul. You'll be treated just like every other person here, though maybe with a bit more curiosity.
"But if you are pregnant, and all the evidence that I provide to Ben supports your statement," she said in a very deliberate tone, "then you'll be treated a great deal better. And you'll have given both of us a chance to get off this island."

She crossed her arms and stepped towards Samantha. "Because if you told him something that could be contradicted by the tests we're about to do, I need to know how to cover for you," she proclaimed. "Being caught in a lie on your very first day among us would guarantee that the rest of your stay is very uncomfortable. So, for the sake of making both of our lives easier, I'd appreciate if you would indeed repeat the same thing again."

"Questioned me about what? What exactly is going on here?"
"If you made any statements to him about your medical condition, I need to know what you said," she explained.

"Thank you very much, Preston," she smiled pleasantly until she was sure he was out of earshot. Then her attention snapped back to Samantha. "Has Ben questioned you yet?" she asked curtly.

"That's very kind of you to say, but I'd find it all the more convincing if you weren't contributing to the ordeal i've been through."
She threw a sidelong glance at Preston, and could only assume what Ben and Pryce had subjected her to. "I apologize, Miss Harkness. We're not used to visitors, as you've probably gathered."
She quickly thought up an excuse to get Preston out of the room and leave her alone with the woman. "Nor are we savages; we do have proper medical attire. Preston, could you retrieve a gown from the locker room for Miss Harkness? As well as a pair of scrubs for me, please?" she asked.

***Juliet enters***
"Dr. Saint," she began, striding in confidently and placing her bag down on the nearest table. "So sorry I'm late. I got held up; Ben didn't ask you to start the exam without me, did he?"
Having put the young doctor on the defensive, she then turned her attention to the object of his imminent examination. "And this must be Miss Harkness," she said. The woman was clearly battered and bruised after falling from the sky, but nonetheless intact and seemingly healthy given the circumstances. "My name's Juliet Burke. I'm another of the resident doctors here, and I'm terribly sorry about the crash. You must have been through a great ordeal," she remarked, in her most sympathetic tone.
