KATE
CLAIRE: "Are you a Gemini?"
Kate paused in surprise, not only at the random question but the correct guess and looked at Claire. "Yes I am," she answered with a chuckle before returning her gaze to the clothes.

Screwing the cap back on the water bottle, I watched little Sarah yawn. She looked warn, as most people on the island did. "Why don't we set you up for a nap in the shade?" I stood up and took her hand, grabbing a large towel as I headed toward the shade from the trees.
Stopping at a nice spot where she wasn't in the lane of a lot of foot traffic and at the same time still viewable from most of the beach, I arranged the towel on the ground and stuck one of the water bottles into the sand next to it. "There we go. You gonna be okay here on your own for a while?"

She tossed a halter top on the 'impractical' pile. "Sure. Shoot," she said, keeping her eyes on the task at hand.

"Just fixing what Gwen started here. I'm sorting the practical clothes from the impractical." Kate held up a skimpy pink top to emphasize 'impractical.' "Care to help?" she asked in a tone that implied that it was okay to say 'no.'

"Really," she said in the same deadpan tone, returning the smirk. She grabbed her water bottle and handed it over to Claire who was in much more need of it than herself.

She saw the swaying movement of Claire in the corner of her eye and quickly turned to look at her, automatically holding out an arm to help steady her. "Whoa. You all right?" she asked with concern as she helped Claire sit down.

Kate looked up to the speaker and gave a brief warm 'hello' smile before looking back down at the piles of clothes. She thought over the minimal non-clothing items she'd come across and shook her head. "No, sorry."

She turned to watch him go, a worried expression still on her face. He needed some alone time. Nothing she said seemed to get through to him. She hoped he'd finally give in to the fatigue soon before he ended up hurt or worse, dead.
Kate shook her head as if those dark thoughts could be easily shaken out. That antsy feeling from standing still too long was getting to her. Kate headed toward the pile of clothing to sort it once again.

She frowned in concern as she shook her head. Jack had been running around for days, day and night, taking care of everyone without a thought for himself. He looked worn out and dead on his feet. No doubt his mind was playing tricks on him. "Jack, when's the last time you slept?"

She looked more closely at the shore to see if she missed something. "What?" she asked in confusion.

She had decided to wait until he finished letting all those negative thoughts out before again attempting to get him to see reason. She had a chance to say something only Jack's undivided attention was elsewhere. "Jack?" She suddenly felt invisible as he just walked past her. Confused, she turned to look at the shore that Jack was intently gawking at and saw... nothing. "Jack." Still nothing but at least it seemed he'd heard her. "Are you okay?"

"You tried." The fact that he tried was more than anyone else, save for Boone, had done. There was just no way Joanna could have been saved. She was sure that Jack knew it but was letting the guilt override that fact.

Kate quickly looked back at Jack as he started laying the blame on himself. "Jack, don't."

Kate momentarily looked down at the sand before returning her gaze to Jack. It was obvious by his expression that he wasn't going to drop this so best get it done with. "Her name was Joanna. She wasn't supposed to be on the plane. She was scuba diving off the barrier reef and got an ear infection, and so the doctor grounded her for two days. She bumped her flight. That's how she ended up with us." Kate looked past Jack to the ocean where she'd last seen Joanna.

I saw Jack returning alone and looked out to shore, no longer seeing any movement besides waves and no longer hearing the cries for help. I was glad little Sarah was okay not talking it over because even though I didn't know who'd been out there or if it was anyone I'd ever even talked to, I didn't think I could get words past the lump in my throat.
Managing a nod, I held little Sarah's hand as we made our way to one of the water tarps.
KATE
Jack was worrying himself too much. He looked terrible. Like he hadn't slept or gotten any peace in days. Kate hesitated before starting to recommend he get some rest. "Jack, maybe you should --"

She watched as Jack came back to shore in frustrated anger and just walked right past her. She let him go, knowing he needed some alone time. Kate looked up to see him making his way back toward the shore. He was heading in her direction but in case he wasn't coming to see her, Kate went to meet him halfway.
"Hey," she simply said as she tries to see past the exterior to what was going on in his mind.

She didn't bother trying anything else to talk Jack out of going back because by the look on his face, it would be a waste of time. He had his mind made up. All she could do now was feel useless as she stood in the water and waited for him to come back. If he showed any signs of struggling, she was ready to try going after him, dumb as that idea was.
HEIDI
I'd also noticed that the woman hadn't surfaced again but I wasn't ready to give up hope so I simply answered, "I don't know." I was of no help just standing here and watching. There were so many other people doing the same who were ready to give a hand and it would probably be in little Sarah's best interest if she didn't witness this whole thing.
"Come on, sweetheart," I said, giving her hand a little tug to get her attention. "Let's get out of the way and fill up our water bottles."

As soon as Jack neared the shore, Kate was running into the waves to help carry Boone out of them. She started to look Boone over for any injuries. Aside from erratic breathing, he was okay, thank God. Confused as to why it wasn't Jack checking Boone over, she looked up only to see him retreating back into the waves. What the heck was he doing? Boone nearly drowned at his attempt and seeing as he was a lifeguard, he had training. "Jack!" she yelled.

After little Sarah pointed out the flailing arms in the ocean, we'd wandered closer alongside several other onlookers. I was surprised when Jack swam back to shore with Boone. I didn't even know he'd been out there. I felt dread as Jack ran back into the water. There was just no way he could get to her. That woman had been carried out so far by the waves now and now we were going to lose Jack if someone didn't stop him. I heard Kate yell out to him and felt a bit of relief. Based on observing the two I knew that they had a friendship and seemed to be two of the few who took charge of things and kept a level head. Kate could talk sense into him. Or maybe not, I thought as he continued on.

KATE
Kate's attention was fully on the flailing arms that she barely noticed someone stop near her. She quickly glanced to see who the speaker was before intently watching the person in distress. "There's a woman out there. I think..." she squinted to be sure, "I think it's Joanna. Boone's swimming out to her." Kate's adrenaline was high, causing her speech to be faster than normal. It was so hard to just stand there. She shifted her weight from foot to foot as she stood next to Ben and watched.

KATE
She still felt tired after a short, restless sleep and was currently in the process of filling up her water bottle when she thought she heard a very faint yell from far away. It was so faint that she'd passed it off as her tired mind playing tricks on her. But then frantic movement from the shore caught her eye and she looked up to see Boone throwing off his shirt and shoes and jumping into the water.
"What-" then she saw, far out in the water, movement. It was a person waving their arms and now that she knew the person was out there, it was as if she could hear the calls for help more clearly. Kate dropped the bottle as she ran for the shore. It would be stupid of her to also attempt to swim out there. Boone, who said he'd been a lifeguard, was probably the best suited for this. Kate would just get in the way or worse, she'd become another victim swept out by the tides. So she waited, hardly able to stand still and ready to help at a moments notice.
