JACK He nodded farewell to James with a faint smile. As James fadded into the distance, Jack's smile fadded with him. Jack considered what James had said, but he didn't really put much thought into it. Jack was the kind of person who would kill himself to make sure everyone else was alright. It wouldn't be until Jack's condition would become extremely severe that he would take notice. Jack sighed and slumped into the sand, staring out at the ocean. His mind was almost completely clear of thought. Only memories remained. ***Flashback*** abclost.proboards40.com/index.cgi?board=rpgbios&action=display&thread=1156356077&page=4#1185419638

James paused partway along the beach. He turned toward the jungle, narrowing his eyes slightly as he stared into its treeline, silently willing its secrets to reveal themselves before him. The voice had been growing stronger these last couple of days and always seemed clearer the closer he got to that mysterious realm of lush greenery, but to divulge this to Jack would have caused the Doctor undue concern. A sudden yell cut through the air, bringing his attention crashing back to earth; he snapped his focus round and back to the beach - someone seemed to be struggling out to sea, struggling against a current the like of which they could not hope to overcome. Panic rose up inside of him; he had never been a fantastic swimmer and already he could hear the echoes of that malicious voice stirring in the confines of his mind...
"Jack!' he yelled, turning back toward the doctor and pointing out to sea, "What is that? I think someone's in trouble!".

JACK
"Jack!"
Jack sat silently. Not ignoring the shout of his name, but simply not taking any notice to it, as if it went in one ear and out the other without actually setting off something in his mind. Jack was too deep in thought, that was until the second shout broke his concentration.
"What is that? I think someone's in trouble!."
Jack looked up quickly, as he realized something was wrong. He looked at James and asked, "What?" He asked almost as a reassurance to what he thought he heard James say.

"What?"
"There, out to sea!" James replied, running back over to Jack and pointing again. "Is that a person?". The view was even worse from here; for all James could tell, the thing bobbing about in the ocean could have been anything, but then again, he could have sworn he'd heard it yell...

JACK
"Is that a person?"
Jack looked out at the water. He could see someone struggling in the water. Without taking a second to think about it, Jack was already in the water. He ran in a few feet before he dove in. He swam as fast as he could, pushing his muscles to the limit.

MICHAEL
Michael's steps slowed as he approached Walt, curiously watching as he used some plant to brush his teeth. "Who taught you that?"
WALT
Walt briefly stopped brushing his teeth with the aloe plant. "Sun. The Korean lady." He scooped up some ocean water to rinse his mouth when Michael stopped him.
MICHAEL
"Don't swallow it," he quickly said when he realized what Walt was doing.
WALT
Walt looked at him curiously, head slightly tilted. "Why not?"
MICHAEL
"Ocean water will make you thirsty."
WALT
How could water make you thirsty? he wondered. "Why?"
MICHAEL
He gave an exasperated sigh. If he gave an explanation it would only lead to 100 more and he didn't feel like giving a science lesson right now. "Just don't swallow it, man, all right?"
He gave a smile of approval at Walt's nod happy that Walt and stopped fighting him at every turn. Walt rinsed his mouth and spit the ocean water out. Michael wiped his face with the damp cloth.
SUN
Sun sat next to Jin and watched with a smile as Walt took advantage of her lesson on using the aloe plant to brush his teeth. It was nice to feel useful.
JIN
Noticing his wife's attention was elsewhere, Jin reached out and touched Sun's chin, his thumb brushed her lips. She looked at him and pulled away a little. He grudgingly put his hand down.
"Look at your lips," he said with concern in Korean. "You really need water."
SUN
She nodded and answered back in Korean. "No. I'm all right. Thank you." Her attention now back to what she'd been doing, she continued folding the clothes. Jin moved away and around her. "When will someone tell us what to do?" she called after him.
He turned to look back at her, making a sound to signify he hadn't heard her. She looked at him, her fear on her face. "I don't think anyone is coming."
JIN
"Someone will come," was all he said.
SUN
His words were not comforting, not that he seemed like he was even trying to be comforting. "The others ... they ignore us. If we tried harder to communicate ..."
JIN
He interrupted her. "We'll be fine. We don't need anyone else." After a brief pause, he added, "I will tell you what to do." He looked at her as if waiting for her to question him. Sun averted her gaze and did not further dare to question her husband, as she was becoming more and more accustomed to.

DR LESLIE ARZT
He hadn't slept that night. Or the night before, really. His eyes were heavy, with dark bags lining them as he sat cross-legged on the beach, staring at the slow waves. Someone had died that morning. A girl, Jodie or whatever. Drowned in the water, but what if she hadn't? What if she'd been eaten by sharks? Torn apart in a feeding frenzy? Paralyzed by a poisonous rockfish? Stung by a Portuguese Man o' War?
OK, so they kept to Portugal, the Portuguese Man o' War. But everyone liked a holiday, it wasn't too far-fetched. Whatever killed her, he was not going to bath. Too dangerous.
Why did everything want to kill him? And to make matters worse, one of his insects had disappeared. It had been Rodriguez. Ana had him last, but he hadn't seen her. But Rodriguez had gone missing, and Leslie was worried about him getting into trouble. They were his babies, after all.
Stupid island.

***Gwen enters***
"Hello, Dr. Arzt," she said, smiling pleasantly as she approached him. He looked terribly tired and discouraged, which was common among everyone, but she was unsure if he knew about the bug carcass in her shelter or how much he blamed her for that. She still felt a bit bad for catching him in the crossfire between her and Ana.
"I was wondering if I could get your opinion on something," she began. "We went into the jungle yesterday, and this little guy seems to have come back with us." She held her hand out to him as the blue-green spiky thing continued to squirm in her palm.

"Hello, Dr. Arzt,"
"Hello, Gwen." he said tonelessly, not looking up at her.
"I was wondering if I could get your opinion on something, We went into the jungle yesterday, and this little guy seems to have come back with us."
He looked over at her, and then down at the palm of her hand. He could see a small caterpillar. A light green with blue tuberclues, it was instantly recognisable as- " An Emperor Gum Moth."
He picked it out of her hand with two fingers, allowing it to clutch to his skin. He placed it down gently in the palm of his hand, smiling. "Opodiphthera eucalypti...looks to be in it's fifth stage. It'll be a beautiful moth, soon." he said, shifting into teacher mode.

"Well, I certainly hope we didn't harm it in transit. I didn't find it in Severin's bag till just now," she explained, noting the slight improvement in his mood. "Do you think they're native to this island?"

"Do you think they're native to this island?"
"No, I think it's on maternity leave from it's office back in Sydney." he said sarcastically, watching the small creature squirm about, uncertain whether to stay still, or what direction to go should it decide to move. What was the point of caterpillars having all those legs, if they didn't know where they were going?

"No, I think it's on maternity leave from it's office back in Sydney."
She fell back a bit at his harsh reply. Honestly, if she wanted dismissive condescension, she could have gone to find Ana. "I just..." she stammered, defensively crossing her arms. "I mean, there seem to be a lot of things on this island that you wouldn't expect to find..."

"I mean, there seem to be a lot of things on this island that you wouldn't expect to find..."
"Yeah. Like big tree-breaking monsters. Just don't bring me any of those unless you house-break it first." he said, deciding the new caterpillar was to be named Fernando.

"Well, I wouldn't. I just...Look, I'm sorry about the whole situation with Ana-Lucia," she finally said. "It was petty and wrong of me to involve you in our disagreement, and I apologize."

He looked at her, completely expressionless. "What situation? Wait...do you have anything to do with Rodriguez disappearing?"

"My insect." he replied, as Gwen was very stupid not to realize who he was talking about. As if Rodriguez was well-loved and popular. "He went missing. I can't find him."

"Oh? Ohhh," she exhaled tensely, realizing that Rodriguez must have been the insect that had invaded her shelter and subsequently met its demise. An insect which Arzt seemed quite attached to.
"No, no. We were away most of yesterday and this morning, so...I've no idea. But the dog, and the kids, perhaps they got curious about your insect collection. It is terribly fascinating. And now you have a colorful new addition," she offered, trying to shift his focus back to the caterpillar.
