James nodded and smiled slightly in reply to Ana's acknowledgement; there was a storm brewing between her and Mason and he was keen to avoid becoming caught up in it if possible.
"Let's head over here, James. Deeper in the jungle we should find stronger branches."
"Good thinking" James replied, not failing to notice that Mason's words had not been for his benefit alone. He couldn't help but feel that being further from the eyes of the camp may make it easier for Ana to react should this conflict escalate, but that, he decided, was a bridge they could cross when they reached it.

ANA-LUCIA
Deeper into the jungle? Good. That meant more out of the way locations for a hole to be dug. She watched Mason lead the way before sidling upto James casually, as if she was now just out for a walk.
"What'd you need stronger branches for?" She asked as she nonchalantly ran her hand over the tops of some bushes she passed. "Granted, your shelter does have a lame roof that could use some re-enforcing." There was a smile.

MASON
"There's a little girl who doesn't have a shelter yet," Mason stated, knowing full well she wasn't talking to him. "We're going to build her a shelter, and I'd rather it not collapse."
He stopped and looked at James and then at Ana-Lucia. He took a step closer to her, still avoiding arm--or leg--range.
"I don't like games, Ana," he said. "So why don't you tell me what it is you want from me."

The smile James felt creeping across his face at the mention of his shelter's roof was quickly wiped from his features. He stopped walking and stood looking from one to the other, waiting for Ana's reply. Mason had a point; it was fairly obvious that she had not joined them for the conversation. She was trying not to reveal her true intentions and that, he knew from years of past experience, did not bode well.

"I don't like games, Ana...So why don't you tell me what it is you want from me."
Ana stopped walking and put her hands on her hips. It crossed her mind that Mason was the self-centered type, since his reference alleged she only wanted something from him. Not both of them. It also crossed her mind he was quite perceptive, since that was indeed the case.
When James stopped too and glanced at them both, Ana gave up the charade and chose to be blunt. For a change. It was pointless to waste time.
"The knife." She said, as if she'd had to give up information she really didn't want to. "Locke gave you a large bowie knife. I want it."

James glanced sideways at Mason, trying to gauge his reaction. He was curious as to why Ana would need the knife but felt that to question the matter would only anger her, therefore reducing the chances of a civilized outcome.
"You can have it when we're done with it" he said fairly, looking back to Ana. "We shouldn't be too long".

MASON
"You can have it when we're done with it" he said fairly, looking back to Ana. "We shouldn't be too long".
He looked at James, then turned back to Ana. "Assuming you have Locke's permission, of course," he said, looking at her the entire time. "They're his knives, seems only fair that he know who has them."
He paused, and looked at James and smiled a bit, then back at Ana. "What the hell do you need a knife for, anyway?"

"Assuming you have Locke's permission, of course....They're his knives, seems only fair that he know who has them."
"I don't need permission, just give me the damn knife." She took a step towards him with her palm out.
"What the hell do you need a knife for, anyway?"
Ana sighed. "I'm practising my knife throwing act. Wanna be the target?" She said sarcastically.

MASON
He took a step back, keeping his right foot in front of his left and turning the knife to the sharp end up, clearly indicating he was going to be ready for her this time.
"I don't need permission, just give me the damn knife."
Ana sighed. "I'm practising my knife throwing act. Wanna be the target?"
"I'm not just going to hand a knife over to someone who has shown tendencies to overreaction and anger," he said, staring at her. "If you go off and stab someone, everyone's going to be asking how she got a knife, and there going to come to me. So how about you tell me exactly what you need the knife for, and I'll think about giving it to you when I'm done."

If James hadn't been there, it would have been far to tempting to pick a rock up and throw it at Mason's head.
"Believe me, if I was going to stab someone, it'd be kinda hard for anyone to talk to you afterwards. If you catch my drift." There was a heavy hint of malice to that which probably wasn't helping Ana's cause, but she just couldn't help it. Finally, to avoid the words 'let's just share and be friends' from coming out of James' mouth, she relented and told them why she needed the knife.
"I need to make a shovel."

"I need to make a shovel."
"And why do you need a shovel?" Mason asked. He knew that she hated him being in a position of power over her, and he was going to milk it for all it was worth.

How else am I going to dig your grave? Was her immediate thought, but surprisingly, she managed to keep it quiet.
"I just spent the entire morning digging a grave with my bare hands for the guy that died last night. It's not something i'd like to do again." Was her solemn reply.

MASON
"I'm not wandering around the jungle without protection," he said flatly. "If you want to help us out, it will take some time out of it. Once we're done out here, you can have it."
He paused, and began walking to a tree. "Oh," he said, turning around and smiling. "You've got to ask me nicely."

James closed his eyes and grimaced slightly. He'd almost managed to work out a reasonable compromise, but it seemed that Mason's last comment had shattered any chance of that completely.
"Mason" James said, re-opening his eyes. "Let's just get on with it".

"If you want to help us out, it will take some time out of it. Once we're done out here, you can have it."
Despite her dislike of Mason, his proposal wasn't unfair. She was about to agree until he added one last remark....
"Oh...You've got to ask me nicely."
Like a red flag to a bull, Mason expertly pushed Ana-Lucia's buttons.
"Son of a bitch..." She mumbled, lunging at Mason with a clear intention that she would punch him in the face and take the knife off him. Or take the knife of him, then punch him in the face. Whatever she was going to do, there'd be fists involved.

James reacted instantly; he leapt forward, catching Ana round the waist before her fist could meet with Mason's face, trying to hold her back without hurting her.
"Nicely done" he said sarcastically to Mason over her shoulder.

There's nothing more annoying that throwing a punch and having it not connect. Which is exactly what had just happened to Ana and it took her a second to realise why.
"Get the hell off of me, man!" She continued to try and run at Mason, but her progress was majorly hampered by being gripped around the waist by a guy who was considerably taller and stronger than she was.
"Let go, or I swear to God I'll knock you out too!" She yelled, struggling against him.

MASON
"That's why I can't give you the knife, Ana," Mason said, calmly. "You're too angry. You're likely to hurt someone, and that's going to be on me if I let you have it. I've got enough guilt on my hands."
He paused, and looked at James, shaking his head. "But I'll keep up my end of the deal. You help us with this, and I'll make sure you have a shovel before sundown."
"Can you calm down enough for James to let you go?" he said, in a serious tone. He didn't know what had happened in her past, but he had made his point, and perhaps she would see why he couldn't give her a weapon. Or perhaps she was a sociopath. Either way, Mason knew he was in her head. Exactly what he wanted.

There is a point when a volcano is about to erupt when you can almost hear the earth crack beneath it. But in truth, if you were standing that close when it happened, you'd be scalded by the lava bursting out seconds later.
If James had been listening closely, he would have heard Ana crack.
"I'll give you angry!" She screamed at Mason, a sudden and uncontrolable red mist descending on her. It was pure instinct that took over from that point and with a primal grunt, she grabbed a hold of James' upper left arm and threw him with all her might over her shoulder as if he was a rag doll. The move was so swift and precise, it was clearly something she'd practiced. Without even thinking about what she had just done, her eyes flicked upto Mason. The look she gave him should have made him very scared indeed.

James landed hard, the sudden impact forcing the air from his lungs. He coughed as he tried to regain his breath, hoping that the asthma he had suffered as a child didn't choose this moment to resurface. He'd been in plenty of fights during his life, but few as one sided as this. Trying to ignore the searing pain in his chest, James stood slowly and glared at Ana, his eyes filled with a mixture of pain and anger.
