BROOKS
He has to be careful. He didn't want to seem too eager to talk to Kyle, but he had urgent matters to discuss with him. He took a swig of water and made his way down to the center of camp.
"Hey, can I have everyone's attention?" Brooks shouted to the camp. "If we want to be done by nightfall, we need to be organized! Now, we need a group of people to start working on the shelters. I'm thinking three three-person teams. The rest of us should collect food and water. Does that sound like a good plan to everyone?"

Paul was about to chip in that he had already drawn up a plan showing the best locations for all of the shelters. But then he re-considered. Aaron had mentioned that he had been military and seemed to have worked counter-intelligence before. Which meant that he would be competent enough to see the gaps in the lines. He would spot the fact that the shell-scrapes for sentries would be too far away from the real shelters to be of much help to anyone in the event of a raid. And that would be the kind of evidence that would throw Paul's intentions and identity into question again.
He left the notepad in his back pocket with the fake passport. Improvise, adapt, overcome.
"He's right." Paul announced, taking a stand alongside the man who had just been pointing a gun at him barely an hour ago. "Let's get started."

Eko stepped forward slightly from the rest of the group which had been scavenging building material from the beach. He tried to show his willingness to help with the way he stood. He dared not to speak still.

Compeyson had done his very best to distance himself from the others. A shirking of responsibility, once again. Responsibility he didn't want.
Etana, Paul, Brooks, Scarlett, all the rest...not his concern. He didn't want to involve himself in their world. It was scary enough, and in such situations, his instinct was to run. Just run. Sadly, there was no place to run this time, and when everyone crowded together, he decided on joining them. There was no benefit in being alone at this precise moment.
He stumbled awkwardly up to the group, staying silent for the moment.
"Let's get started."
Building shelters didn't sound like fun. Food, then. That would be safe, as long as he kept to the jungle outskirts. Right?

KYLE
As the others got to work, Kyle walked over to Brooks casually. He spoked, trying to avoid anyone listening in, "Building shelters is all well and good, but sooner or later your going to tell me what happened out there right?" Kyle paused giving Brooks a straight face.

"I have my answer," he said. "I'll talk to you in a little bit about it. I'm not trying to keep you out of the loop, Kyle. I just... I need some time. It will be sooner, though, trust me."

He started to arrange the material he had at his disposal for making one of the shelters. It was a pity they didn't have a machete handy. The branches of some of the trees along the perimeter of the jungle that the tall silent man with the stick had indicated would have been excellent for creating supports on a lean-to.
He had a glance around to see who was working and who wasn't, just so he would have an idea of who would have personalities best fit for a future list, if one was needed. The Survivors frustrated him now. The evening before, they had demonstrated a worrying xenophobia but they had also exhibited a strong work ethic. The moment they had become aware of Paul's presence, they had reacted. Nearly everyone on the beach had debated his fate and contributed to the decision-making process.
Now? They shirked their responsibilities. They lingered, as if the role they had been given in the construction process of these shelters was to be a supervisor. No one asked for supervision. No one needed it. But it wasn't Paul's place to demand that they get to work and pitch in. Every society has free-loaders. Not every society has the same way of dealing with them. Some institutionalize them, like the Soviet Union did. Others just left them out in the cold and pretended they didn't exist, like the United States of America and other developed states did. No, Paul wasn't inclined to ruin what he could learn from the way people like Brooks, the wounded man and Etana treated them. He'd already interfered too much in this little society's early development stages.
His gaze continued along the building teams until it rest on the wounded man and Brooks. They were talking. Which wasn't something Paul wanted. Creating a stressor upon the fellow's mental state was something which would yield some interesting results.
"Do you have anything sharp?" He called out over to them. "Need to cut some of those branches down from that tree to act as supports." He pointed to a nearby tree.

Kyle nodded, "Fair enough."
"Need to cut some of those branches down from that tree to act as supports."
Kyle looked at Brooks, and then at Paul. He hesitated, but then approached him, "Sure, I think I have what you need," Kyle pulled out the knife that he kept in a holster around his ankle. Kyle looked to Brooks for a signal to tell Kyle that giving Paul a knife wasn't a great idea, but never the less Kyle handed Paul the knife.

"Sure, I think I have what you need."
He cautiously accepted the knife. "Ganz gut! Danke schön." He replied, cheefully and then went to cut down branches from the tree up ahead that he was sure the tall African man had pointed out earlier.
The utter change in mood would confuse, he was sure. It was an experiment someone he'd known in University had tried. They'd had a lot of fun defying social norms in elevators and then reporting their findings. Standing awkwardly close to other people. Sitting on the floor of the elevator as it went up floors. Singing loudly while plugged into a Walkman. Good times.
Of course, this was different. Paul had been doing it then for fun and to be close to her. Now he was playing that game for the marbles. He could annoy and confuse. But not too much. Go overboard, and he could expect that gun to be pointed at him again.

AARON
Brooks glanced at Kyle and nodded silently. "He'll keep in line for the time being. I know who he is now, and he knows that I know." He glanced at Kyle.
"I've got a plan, don't worry," he said, and made sure no one was looking at him. He pulled the gun out of his pants and handed it to Kyle non-chalantly. "He knows all I'm looking for is some evidence he is whom we both know he is."

KYLE
Kyle grabbed the gun and stuck in the back of his jeans. He then lifted his shirt of his pants to cover up the weapon. Kyle knew that the others already knew he had a gun, he just didn't want them to feel uneasy around him.
"He knows all I'm looking for is some evidence he is whom we both know he is."
Kyle nodded, "Alright then..." Kyle paused and stared at Paul. Paul seemed to be almost harmless, he was cutting off branches and helping everyone out with the shelters, and yet, this made Kyle even more disgusted. "Sooner or later he'll slip, and we'll decided what to do with him then. But if he threatens or hurts any of us..." Kyle paused as he looked around, "I'm gunna kill him myself."

Brooks looked at Kyle and then back at Paul, then back at Kyle. "I've actually got a better idea, when the time comes," Brooks said. "But we'll have to wait until later to talk about it."

"But we'll have to wait until later to talk about it."
Kyle paused as he looked up, he was extremely curious of what Brooks plan was, but Kyle knew he would have to wait till later to find out. Kyle just hoped is something good enough to make Paul suffer, and to send a message to the rest of their people.

DONALD
Making these shelters was hard work. Falling out of the sky and then being put to work as slave labour wasn't exactly his idea of a good vacation. But, at the same time, getting drenched by the rain and contracting pneumonia wasn't his idea of a good vacation either. If people on this beach were to wake up out of their daze and help out too, he wouldn't have to be slugging his guts out with this stupid contraption he was cobbling together. He just felt like... like yelling at the people who ran off to supposedly look for food. He wanted to punch a couple of them in the face. Yeah! That's what he wanted to do! Punch 'em in their pampered young faces.
He stopped and set down the bamboo-like beam he had been trying to lash up as a support. He had to watch his temper. And his anger. His blood pressure was pretty high when he'd left and he had nearly been denied medical insurance for the flight because of his high risk. It was just that being here on this island was so unfair. And he was so thirsty. So very thirsty.
He looked out down the beach to the water of the sea. Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink. It was all salt. It would dehydrate him more than the sun was. Still, it was tempting. He thought about walking out to get himself a drink when the waves suddenly began to reflect the intense light of the sun into his eyes. It burned worse than the chlorine of a swimming pool.
He staggered away, cursing. He felt his temper rising again. He cursed the stupid plane that got him to this stupid island with these stupid people. He cursed the stupid sun that made him thirsty and the stupid salt that made the stupid water undrinkable. He cursed the stupid man whose idea it was to make these stupid shelters in the first place and he... he...
Donald felt a tight pain in his chest. It felt like a steel hand had reached in and gripped his heart tightly in a fist, draining away the colour from his face and sapping away his life.
He collapsed to the ground, not caring about the sand that his impact kicked up only to drift back down over his prone body. Donald was having a heart attack.

KYLE
Kyle carried on about his business, still helping with the shelters. He didn't say much, he basically kept his mouth shut for the time being. He began tying pieces of bamboo together using wiring that he stripped from the plane wreckage. He pulled it tight, making sure that it wouldn't fall apart. He stopped for a moment, taking a break to wipe the sweat off of his forehead. He looked over at Paul, giving him the same suspicious look he'd given him since he showed up. Kyle took a deep breath and went back to work. He placed the bamboo on the ground, and stepped on it, to put pressure on the bamboo as he pulled the wire tight.
As he did so, he couldn't help but notice someone staggering in the corner of his eye. He looked up, making sure what he was seeing was actually real. His grip on the wire loosened as he called out, "Hey buddy, you alright?" As there was no response he dropped the wire and slowly started to walk towards the man. Kyle had a concerned look on his face. Suddenly the man dropped to the floor, "Sh*t," Kyle said to himself in anxiety as he bolted towards the man.

PAUL
"Hey buddy, you alright?"
Whenever someone raised their voice, Paul immediately shifted his attention to them. It was important to know every detail of every conflict and incident that arised amongst The Survivors and how they reacted to these phenomena of social interaction. The way an early society resolves internal and external disputes is as telling a factor of its composition as any. Plus, jumping out of his skin whenever someone yelled something played well with the character he was trying to portray- an extremely frightened young man who was trying to be brave, despite everything.
He saw that he wasn't being spoken to. It was someone he'd not had much interaction with, lying face down in the sand now.
"Aerzt! Wir brauchen-!" He called out, before 'catching' himself and switching to English. "Doctor! We need a doctor!"
He followed Kyle at a sprint, though he knew he wouldn't be much help. Basic first aid probably wouldn't help if this was as serious as it seemed.

KYLE
He didn't bother slowing down as he reached the man who lay motionless in the sand, instead, he slid along the sand next to him. He tried to think of basic training at the academy before rolling him over. "Hey! You alright!" he called out trying to get a response. "Let's get some water over here!" he yelled out to the others. He rolled over onto his back and checked to see if he was breathing. Kyle tilted the man's head back to make sure the tongue wasn't blocking the air wave. He put his ear to the man's mouth and stared at his chest to see if it was moving. He then placed to fingers on his neck. "He doesn't have a pulse," he told Paul, who he noticed had followed him when he ran over. He breathed into his mouth twice, about 4-8 seconds apart. He then checked again to see if he was breathing. When Kyle was certain he wasn't he started to do chest compressions.
"1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7..." he continued until he reached 15 and then he checked to see if he was breathing and then started the compressions again. He continuously did sets of 15 breathing in between sets until he had finished 4 sets and then checked his pulse again. "C'mon damn-it," he muttered as he continued.

BROOKS
He had stopped what he was doing to run over as well, and got there third. He glanced at Paul and then at everyone closing in. He took two steps away, and pulled a water bottle out of his sack that was half full, and threw it to Kyle.
"Everyone, stay back, give him some air," Brooks said. He looked at Etana, and then at Zach and Emma. He spoke in a flat, calm voice but his eyes cried out to her. "They don't need to see this."

ETANA
Like the rest, Etana had tried to busy herself assisting with the building of shelters but also trying to keep track of the two children among them, Zach and Emma. They'd been gathering and stacking up large palm fronds that could be used for roofing or walls, when the children were distracted by a commotion elsewhere and ran off to see what happened. "Wait for me," she called after them.
They stopped short at the sight of man lying prone in the sand, with Kyle beginning CPR and Paul and Aaron hovering nearby.
"They don't need to see this."
She looked up at Aaron and nodded. It certainly wasn't the first frightening thing that the children had seen, nor the first instance of death on the island, but they didn't need to be reminded of the dangers all around them. "Come along," she said, gently turning them away by the shoulders and ushering them aside. "Mister Kyle will take care of him. Everything will be fine." She glanced back one more time, and then kept walking.
