BROOKS The psychologist nodded as he looked at Kyle, a slight smile on his face. "Getting him alone isn't going to be easy," he said. "I think I scared the crap out of him last night."
He paused and looked down at the ground, thinking. "We need to figure out something he needs, something he wants, and I'll say I found it, and tell him to come with me."
He sighed and looked up at Kyle. "You're going to have to do a little recon."

"Damn, you're a hell of a lot better at this then I am," he complimented, "and figuring out something he wants? That's easy, he came running out of the jungle asking if anybody had found an information card."

"Fine." Paul blinked in frustration. "Fine! We'll build your shelters first, and then I'll figure out how far out we are from Australia. Just keep in mind that I had a concussion yesterday. I should be avoiding anything strenuous for 24 hours, not building log shacks and mud huts on a beach in the..."
Paul sighed and touched the bandage on his forehead. Then he knelt down and looked for a blank page in his notepad. He gestured for the tall African man to follow him down so that he could see what Paul was about to sketch out. "In Austria, we're expected to serve a year in the Army when you graduate from school but before you go to University or into the workforce. So I remember a little bit about tactics. Supposedly there are crazy jungle people out there, so we had better orient our camp like so..."
He began drawing out a map for the arrangement of shelters on the beach and a forward camp in the jungle. It would be defensible. But with subtle gaps.

"Well, in order to be a psychologist you have to understand the way people think a little," he said with a warm smile, showing he was okay with the compliment. "He wanted the card to see how far from Australia we were, right? There were some seats in the woods, I could take him there."
He looked at the ground and then looked back at Kyle. "You're going to need to help me if we're wrong on this. I can imagine what we're about to do will anger some of the camp members."

Kyle rubbed his forehead, "I know, but better safe then sorry right?" Kyle asked rhetorically, "And if we are wrong, I'll handle the pissed off members that we have," he winked as a sign of trust.

BROOKS "I live by that motto," he said. He glanced off in the distance, looking at something that wasn't really there. "When you've seen the things I've seen, you can never be too careful."
He paused and looked down at the ground. "Alright, there's just one trick... how do I get him to stay when I start asking him questions... I don't have any rope or anything."

It was a one-sided conversation and intensely frustrated Paul. But he just kept on as the other man continued to refuse to respond to Paul's prompts for verbal communication. The 'strong and silent' fellow just sat there, ocasionally nodding his assent or motioning at certain places or people with his eyes or weapon.
"So, because you interrupted me before I could figure out how long help will take, we have to assume they'll be here soon." Paul explained. "That means we have to have a presence on the beach which can be seen from the sky and from the water. But that also means we will be seen from the jungle too. If there really are people living out there, they'll be able to see our shelters from a long ways off. That's ok. It works as, ah, bait."
Paul showed the sketch on his notepad to the other man- a little proud of his own creation. "We'll have the shelters arrayed in a semi-circle on the beach itself. But just inside the jungle, we'll have one shelter set up which will be empty. This is another bit of bait. Looks like a guard house, ja? But it's not!"
He pointed at two locations just inside the jungle which were roughly 50 metres away from the indicated location for the fake guardhouse. "We can dig two fox holes, ja, there and there. We have sentries posted there, ja? OK? So... that way, when the 'bad guys' show up, they'll slip into the guardhouse to take out our sentries. But the sentries won't be there! It is, as you say, that the hunter becomes the hunted."
Paul grinned and looked to the tall African man for approval. "Ganz gut? It's a good plan, right?"
But as Paul looked over the camp of survivors while the 'strong and silent' fellow glanced over his map again, Paul's expression turned sour. This 'Aaron Brooks' was talking with the wounded man. The wounded man with the gun.

BROOKS
He glanced over the camp and looked back at Kyle. "I want you to do something, and don't ask why," he said, moving his hands in an unrelated fashion, as if he were explaining a shape. "When I finish this sentence start laughing as if I've just told a joke. We're being watched." Aaron finished his sentence and let his hands down a bit, smiling broadly at Kyle.

KYLE
"When I finish this sentence start laughing as if I've just told a joke. We're being watched."
Kyle froze, he wanted to look around, but he knew it would make them look suspicious, "Son of a bitch," he whispered. He did as Brooks told him too and started laughing. It was hard for Kyle to fake laugh, mainly because even if Brooks had told a joke, Kyle probably wouldn't have laughed.

Paul saw the pair laughing and, at first, felt relieved. The man with the gun and Aaron were just sharing a casual friendly conversation, not planning to interrogate or kill him. But something seemed out of place.
Prior to Aaron's animated joke, the expression of the other man had been quite grim. This might be all and well good, considering the situation of The Survivors, but Paul knew enough about human behaviour to know people's moods and tendencies didn't change quite so quickly. Just last night, Aaron was confronting Paul and acted like a humourless and paranoid xenophobe. This was understandable, if the man's story about his life was true. Becoming a stand-up comedian over-night was not understandable. It didn't mesh well with Paul's experiences. People did not change. If they did, they changed back to their original habits soon enough or the changes were only superficial- a guise to conceal long-held interests and motives. The motivations of these two Survivors in particular did not bode well for Paul, from what he could tell.
He decided to try something.
Paul looked back to the tall African man. "So it's good? Now all we need is some cheap labour to help build it, hm?" He asked, standing up and holding out his hand to accept the notepad back.

BROOKS "He's looking this way," he said. "I tried to buy us a cover, but if this guy is crafty he might see through it." He glanced at Kyle, with a smirk on. "You aren't much of a laugher I take it. That was a pretty sorry laugh."
Brooks sighed and glanced around, still wearing a fake smile from earlier.
"You know how I got into psychology? I found one day in college that people--perfect strangers would just talk to me about all their problems. So, that's what I did... I just listened to people--that's the most I can do for people. Most people are too broken by the time they realize to come to me to have any hope of fixing."
He paused and looked at the camp. "Somehow, I don't think these people will be talking to me."

KYLE
"Somehow, I don't think these people will be talking to me."
"Don't sweat it, people around here are a little too shook up to want to confide in anyone, they seem to be very separated from each other," Kyle admitted, it seemed a little hypocritical to talk about the others that way seeing as how he had the exact same problem. He paused for a second, "Is he still looking?"

"So it's good? Now all we need is some cheap labour to help build it, hm?"
Mister Eko scowled at Paul. 'Cheap labour' wasn't exactly the right choice of words. It sounded like using people. And Mister Eko didn't see people as tools for anything but God's will. If the rest of the survivors wished to help with the project of building the shelters, that would be their choice and it would be made because God willed them to make that decision. But if the rest of the people who had made it off the plane alive did not want to help, then they shouldn't be compelled or manipulated to do so.
The plan which he had been examining looked good. But there seemed to be something wrong about it. Eko had never served in the Nigerian Army, but he had fought against them and the forces of rival warlords enough to know a few things about jungle warfare and its tactics. The people who had come before to take the children obviously knew a few things about jungle warfare too. Would they see any gaps in this plan? Would splitting the sentries as Paul had suggested be wise or would it make it possible for their attackers to flank the beach and only have to deal with one or two guards, instead of many more?
Eko was uneasy and he wanted to make sure Paul understood this.

The first stage of the test was reasonably successful. The other man was an African and, while Paul detested using racial profiling, the use of the emotionally charged words 'cheap labour' had elicited a response. This meant the other fellow could speak English. He could understand the language, at least. He just refused to speak. It wasn't that he couldn't speak. That was impossible. If the tall African was mute before the plane crash, The Island would have remedied his condition by now.
Paul threw his hands up defensively and smiled in a friendly manner. "I didn't mean anything by it! Nothing at all! I'm just saying we're going to need help to put these shelters up. A mute man and a guy with a bad headache aren't going to be very... efficient, nicht wahr? I'll go ask our friends for some help, eh?"
Paul walked away back down the beach so that he was reasonably close to the rest of the camp. "My friend- the quiet one- and I, we need help with building shelters." He began, speaking loudly enough to be heard by everyone, but just quietly enough to force them to draw in closer to hear his words. "If we keep sleeping as we have, and it keeps raining as it has, we'll all be sick. So we need good shelters. And we need help to build them. Anyone want to help?"
He looked from person to person with an innocently inquisitive expression. Feel sorry for me. I'm a stupid foreigner, but a well-intentioned one. What harm could there be in humouring me?

Kyle looked back at Paul, and then back at Brooks shrugged, "Might as well help him in the meantime..." Kyle paused looking around the see if anyone was watching, "If when you're questioning him he gets to be a little rough, use this," Kyle pulled out the nine mm he had hanging from his belt. He held it low, and blocked it from people's sight with his shirt. He handed it to Brooks.

"If we keep sleeping as we have, and it keeps raining as it has, we'll all be sick. So we need good shelters. And we need help to build them. Anyone want to help?"
He walked over to Paul, "Hey, I'll help," he agreed. "And you're absolutely right, if we keep living in the conditions we are now, we are bound to get sick." Goodwin turned to Eko and nodded, "Hello there."

Paul smiled politely and offered his hand to Goodwin. "Danke schön."
He looked out over the rest of the camp and asked, "Are there any more volunteers? We'll meet up by the treeline to go over the, eh, building plans."
With that, he turned and walked back up to the spot the tall African man had brought him to.

"Hello there."
Mister Eko offered a bow of his head in response to the greeting of the one other volunteer from the survivors. It was good that they had another athletic and physically fit person to help with the building of the shelters. But even with the three of them- Eko, Paul and this new volunteer- it would take a long time to assemble shelters for the entire camp. It could become apparent what they were trying to do if they were forced to stretch the work out over several days and the people from the jungle came to investigate the activity before the building was completed.
But Eko was confident people would understand Paul's reasoning and offer their help in their own time.
He walked back up the beach after Paul. He trusted this man and felt that, whoever he was, he might be a good leader to help the people maintain cohesion until rescue arrived. But he was also worried that this Paul's eccentricities might get in the way of things. And Eko couldn't help but shake the feeling that Paul was the kind of man who needed to go to confession more often. There seemed to be a burden there which had been around much longer than the few days since the crash.

BROOKS The disgruntled man silently followed Kyle, giving him a brief nod. He was not pleased with the situation but also needed to be closer to the rest of the group. He clenched his fists and walked over to the group, silently offering his help.

ETANA
"Are there any more volunteers? We'll meet up by the treeline to go over the, eh, building plans."
She was conflicted. On the one hand, she didn't wish to openly defy Kyle and Aaron, and whatever they were discussing in their intense conversation. But on the other, she wished to be of service to these people with whom she was trapped. They may have been strangers on the plane but now they had to rely upon each other for basic survival. And working with the newcomer Paul might help her to better discern his motives, if he had any.
She hurried to catch up with them. "I wish to help as well," she offered. "Granted, I'm not the strongest or the most architecturally-gifted, but I know how to take orders." She smiled weakly.
