"Yah, California girl, born and raised. So, why are you flying far from home to somewhere even farther than home?" I hoped I wasn't getting too personal. Some people were really paranoid about what they told to strangers.

IT'S ME
"Just a holiday, really. Visiting some relatives, mooching off them, seeing the sights and getting burned by the sun." I said, managing a smile.

BRITTANY
When I entered the plane I got a little claustrophobic. I'm not exactly keen on enclosed spaces with lots of people around. Kinda like my fear of being on a ship in the middle of the ocean with no land in sight. It's a little creepy. I followed the people in front of me, looking for row 18 and finally spotted it. Damn, I was in the middle. Oh well, nothing I could do about it now. I stepped passed the man sitting in seat D and sat down in my seat, buckling my seatbelt. I hoped the inflight movie was a good one.
SAYWER
Sawyer was losing patience quickly. The people in front of him were milling about, not knowing exactly where they were supposed to sit. "Jesus, would you find your seat already? It ain't that hard. Find your goddamn row and sit down," he told them.
A man, about fourty years old, turned around and said, "Excuse me, there's no need to be that rude. You'll get to your seat soon enough."
"If you people would hurry the fuck on, I'd get there a lot sooner," he retorted. The man didn't dignify that with an answer and just turned back around.
After about five minutes of slow moving, Sawyer finally got to his seat at 15D and sat down, ignoring everyone around him.

Percy Severin Darling slumped down in his seat, looking in all directions around him. He didn't hate flying, he hated waiting. Usually. Not so much lately. These days, he loved the waiting.
Just being still, quiet, time to think, no need to talk to anyone, just clam up. Peace and quiet.
And right now, he didn't want the journey to end. He wished he could go to sleep, a peaceful sleep, and keep on dreaming. Never wake up. That would be ideal.
People who moved past him never noticed him. Like he was ghost, they moved right through him. He was nothing. Just a person. Nothing different.
He closed his eyes and leaned back, waiting for the short silence that came after everyone had settled.

"So you have relatives in Australia and Los Angeles?" I asked, confused whether he meant he was coming from or going to visit relatives.

Safety Announcement:
"Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome aboard Oceanic Flight 815 with direct service to Los Angeles. We'd like to briefly request your attention while important safety information is reviewed.
"Federal law requires your compliance with all lighted signs, posted placards, and crew-member instructions.
"To fasten your seatbelt, place the flat metal end into the buckle. To release, lift the faceplate of the buckle. Tighten by pulling on the strap. Your seatbelt should be fastened low and tight across your hips.
"All Oceanic Airlines flights are non-smoking. There is no smoking in the aircraft, including the lavatories. The lavatories are equipped with smoke detectors. Tampering with, disabling, or destroying a lavatory smoke detector is prohibited.
"There are six exits on this aircraft...two doors at the front of the cabin, two window exits over the wings, and two doors at the rear of the aircraft. Again, there are two doors at the front of the cabin, two window exits over the wings, and two doors at the rear of the aircraft. Please take a moment now to locate the exit nearest you, keeping in mind that the closest useable exit may be behind you.
"The cabin is pressurized for your comfort and safety. In the unlikely event of a cabin depressurization, oxygen masks will appear overhead. Reach up and pull the mask closest to you, fully extending the plastic tubing. Place the mask over your nose and mouth, and slip the elastic strap over your head. Tighten by pulling on the ends. The bag does not need to inflate for oxygen to be flowing. If you are seated next to a small child or someone needing assistance, secure your own mask first, then assist the child.
"In the event of a water landing, your seat-bottom cushion serves as a flotation device. To use it, place your arms through the straps and hug the cushion to your chest.
"If I or my my fellow flight attendants can be of any assistance, please don't hesitate to ask. We'd like to thank you again for choosing Oceanic Airlines, and we hope that you'll have a safe and pleasant flight."

Upon concluding the safety announcements, Gwen joined the other attendants in economy class, making sure that everyone was buckled in safely, that all electronic devices were turned off and that the overhead compartments were closed. It amazed her how often people expected her to defy the laws of physics and squeeze yet one more bag into an already quite-full compartment. Perhaps she should have been a magician.

After hearing the announcement she hugged Floppers closer to her. She could A Drown, B Suffocate, or worse be Trampled on…
“Floppers I’m scared.” she hugged him closer and started to recite the ABC’S backward. It always helped her stay focused.

Before I could respond to the guy next to me, the announcement from the pilot, then a flight attendant were heard. A flight attendant stood in the front of the section, one on each side, as they motioned with the safety announcement. I could feel the plane starting to move. I watched the attendant do the whole required presentation and made the usual jokes.
"Gee, I'm so glad they have that seatbelt to show us how to buckle. And the exits, good thing they point them out since those things tend to move around," I said in a sarcastic manner. I listened to the rest of the presentation then remembered the guy next to me mention he wasn't too thrilled about plane rides. "Don't worry," I said. "Everything will be fine. Nothing ever goes wrong. There's sometimes a little turbulence, but there's rarely anything more than that." I gave a reassuring smile.

Grace was settled comfortably in her seat, between her aunt and a tweed-suited businessman reading the Wall Street Journal. She pulled out Wuthering Heights, which she had to read for a summer assignment, and immersed herself in the tragic story of Heathcliff and Cathy. The only time she looked up was when Ruth tapped her shoulder and indicated the flight attendant making the safety announcement. Alternately glancing between the safety attendant's demonstrations and Ruth's interpreting, Grace worried her lower lip between her teeth. She was fine with flying, but hated long flights over open water. Drowning was one of her biggest fears.
The second Ruth stopped signing, Grace signed a curt "Thanks" and turned back to her book. When she finished this, she had Crime and Punishment in her carry-on. Reading was one of the best ways for Grace to remain calm on flights such as this.

Krystal sighed.
"What a load of rubbish," she said, staring down at the cheap in-flight magazine, "and champagne. I NEED champagne."
"Well, you should have booked into first class then, shouldn't you?" The fat man asked her, in a patronising tone.
"Great plan Sherlock," said Krystal, "then you certainly wouldn't have found me, huh?" She said sarcastically.
"Just because you are a complete moron doesn't mean you have to take it out on me," the fat man said angrily, "you are to blame for all of this. It is YOUR fault."
"Stop making a scene," Krystal frantically whispered, as a very attractive man with longer hair turned and gave them a look. Oooh... he was cute.
"I will make a scene if I want," said the fat man, "you wanted to leave, so you can face your punishment - "
But by that time Krystal had pretended to go to sleep, leaving the fat man cursing and angry.

"Everything will be fine. Nothing ever goes wrong. There's sometimes a little turbulence, but there's rarely anything more than that."
"Yeah, thanks." I said with a smile. "I know it's the safest method of travel, the thing that bothers me is that even if you're in a car accident, you can squirm out, or wear a seatbelt. You never hear a news report that says, 'Today a jumbo jet crashed into a great big freakin' mountain in Peru and burst into flames....luckily....everyone was wearing their seatbelts! Never happens. And then there's the whole presentation thing...you know-"
I pulled out the guide from the seat pocket. "It tells ya on the flippin' thing. They talk to you like you're mentally ill. You know, 'put on your safety float thing...and do a double bow'. So the planes upside down and on fire, and there's people running about screaming, and there's some guy saying, 'how d'you do a double bow?'"

MOLLY She buckled her seatbelt, rolling her eyes slightly. Everyone's tempers seemed close to boiling point, though some were laughing in Business class at some wanna-be-pop star dancing in the middle of the aisle. Jesus, she thought, and they moan about me?! At least I'd have the decency to jump around quietly. She began laughing loudly, and tried to stiffle her sniggers.
ASHLEE Ashlee smirked at the teenager's comments, and wished she had a window seat. One snobby woman was complaining about lack of champayne. Err, hello? Where'd she think she was, on a private jet or somethin'? Her roots needed doing, Ashlee thought cattily, and cast around for another topic to think about.
There was a little girl, hugging a teddy. Not that she cared, she never had much patience for little kids, but she had to be what, 7? Why the hell was she on a plane, on her own? She seemed to be scared, aswell. Ashlee wondered about smiling encouragingly at her, then decided against it. It'd probably come out like a leering smirk anyway.
There was a sick-bag in the pouch on the back of the chair infront, as well as napkins, and other useless junk. The flight attendant was speaking again, and she heard someone trying to stiffle their laughter, and failing miserably, from somewhere behind her.

He glanced around, and slowly opened a small, plain black book. He started to turn the worn, yellow pages decorated with scrawly black handwriting. He sighed a little, and looked at the two empy seats next to him.
He squirmed in his seat as he put the diary away, intending to sleep for the rest of the journey.

"When is this plane going to take off?" Krystal asked impatiently.
"You were always a moany and silly little girl," her fat companion said, without looking up from his book.
"Girl? I am twenty four," Krystal said frustratingly.
"Krystal, I think we all know you are a bit older than that," the fat man said dissaprovingly.
"Ok, just turned twenty five."
The fat man coughs loudly.
"Okay! Okay! I am twenty eight, alright?" Krystal says angrily, "Goodness, why were you always so forward?"
"Like you care," the fat man said.
"Now that you mention it, I don't," said Krystal.
An air stewardess passed., and Krystal flagged her down.
"Excuse me darling, but can you tell me when we are actually going to get started," said Krystal, in the tone of talking to someone underneath her in society, "because the last time I read a dictionary (the fat man snorts) planes were meant for FLYING and flying means some kind of MOVEMENT, which actually isn't happening. To summarise for you," Krystal laughs in a fake manner, "when is this big scap of metal gonna hit the road, or well, the air?"

SAWYER
He buckled his seatbelt and rested his arms on the armrests. Wouldn't be long until they were in the air and he'd be back in the U.S. He felt the plane move as it taxied on the runway and began to pick up speed for take off.
