He nodded. "I understand, my dear. We survived, we're the lucky ones. Now we just have to figure out to keep surviving."

I stopped and turned toward him, giving him a curious look. "You say that as if you know we won't be rescued. Do you know something I don't?"
I hadn't exactly been keeping up with the 'news' of the island. I knew the transceiver party had returned because I'd seen some of the people back but I had no idea what the outcome had been. Maybe I should start getting up the nerve to talk to people; ask them what's happened.

"You say that as if you know we won't be rescued. Do you know something I don't?"
"Didn't you hear?" he asked, suddenly worried and not wanting to be the bearing of bad news. "They retrieved the transciever from the plane, but...there was no signal."

"Oh," I said, feeling a slight pang. "No, I hadn't heard." I began walking again toward the camp and my optimism, as usual, kicked in. "But I'm sure they're still looking for us." I gave him a smile. "We'll probably be rescued sometime soon." A part of me buried under the optimism had some doubts, which was why I was carrying a tarp out of the jungle and intenting to build a shelter with it.

"We'll probably be rescued sometime soon."
He gave an encouraging smile as he helped her with the tarp. "Yes, I'm certain. If we don't get rescued, may I spend the rest of my life trapped on a Godforsaken spit of land with strange noises coming from the jungle."

I laughed. "That you will. It really is a beautiful place," I said looking around me. "It could even be called a paradise if it weren't for that one, and hopefully only, threat." I thought about those noises and couldn't for the life of me figure out what could be making them. "What do you suppose it is that's making those noises and knocking down trees?"

"I honestly don't have the first idea. I just know I want to stay out of it's way."

"I'm right behind you on that one," I said in all seriousness. That thing, whatever it was, scared the hell out of me.

He pushed past the trees, glancing upwards, looking around for fruit to be picked. He looked back to make sure Gwen was following him.

***Gwen enters from G3 - Area of Survivor's Camp***
Gwen stepped hesitantly through the trees and the jungle undergrowth. The last two times she'd been in these surroundings, she ended up running for her life--that first night with Sayid and Ethan, and earlier that morning as they rushed away from the cockpit. She felt her eyes darting from side to side and her breath catching at every odd sound.
When Ethan glanced back at her, she smiled and tried to maintain that she was totally fine. This likely wouldn't be her last trip into the jungle for supplies, so she needed to get over the fear, rational as it may be. And anyway, she felt an odd sense of security with Ethan nearby.
"So what sort of fruit can we expect to find out here?" she inquired. "I usually tend to ignore that part of the food pyramid."

He laughed slightly, starting to climb a tree, getting a good foothold. "Mangos and the like, that's what I saw." he replied, climbing higher. He reached up, grabbing one and breaking it away from the branch. He could sense something....off about her. Like she was hiding something, putting on a brave face, and he felt his admiration for her grow. "Are you into sports? Catch." He tossed a mango down towards her.

She merely watched as he effortlessly climbed the tree and then scrambled to catch the mango he dropped towards her. "No, actually, I'm rubbish at sports," she called up to him. "Unless it's pool, and usually that's just an excuse to drink and hit things with sticks. I'm very good at Scrabble, though," she asserted.

"I'm not a sports guy myself, apart from golf. I was never very good at scrabble, I kept making up words with one too many Zs." he replied, tossing down another mango. "And who doesn't love pool?"

She scurried over to catch the next mango. "Ha! Zs and Qs--the bane of every Scrabble player's existence. That's why 'qat' is a wonderful word to know."
She leaned down to place the second mango next to the first one, beginning a collection. "Honestly, I don't know if I've ever won a game of pool. We'd just sort of take shots in between drinks, never really kept score," she mused. "And golf? That's my father's game. Every year, he'd leave us on his annual pilgrimage to St. Andrews."

"Ha! Zs and Qs--the bane of every Scrabble player's existence. That's why 'qat' is a wonderful word to know."
"Y'see, that's the kind of word where I don't want to ask if it's real, in case it is and I look stupid. So you get the points."
"Honestly, I don't know if I've ever won a game of pool. We'd just sort of take shots in between drinks, never really kept score," she mused. "And golf? That's my father's game. Every year, he'd leave us on his annual pilgrimage to St. Andrews."
"Your father's game? Don't make me feel old. My cousin taught me how to play golf, my father wanted me to play football. So maybe the golf thing is a subtle way of rebelling." he replied, hopping down from the tree, landing in front of her with three mangos bundled under his arm. "Least I wasn't cutting myself and writing awful poetry."

"Oh, that's a shame. The world needs more self-destructive, emo writers," she remarked, with a slight smile. She gathered up the mangos from the ground into her own arms. "And I didn't mean to make you feel old. Really. I'm sure golf is played by many young manly men of manliness such as yourself. But why was that your chosen method of rebellion? Why not water polo or...badminton or...embroidery? I bet you could stitch some lovely pillows if you tried."

"Ha ha. And now you're making fun of poor, fragile-minded little me." he said, with a smile. "This is the thanks I get for getting you mangos."

"I'm not making fun of you," she insisted. "I'm being completely serious. You have no idea how cut-throat the world of embroidery can be. I could tell you stories that would harrow your very soul."
She maintained her gravely serious look until finally breaking into a smile. "Okay, maybe I was mocking you a little bit. But I am grateful for the mangos. And for everything that you've done. Just being there, and listening to all my disjointed ramblings. I appreciate it. That I'm being totally serious about."
She finally tore her eyes away from his and turned back toward the camp. "And qat is a real word. If we find a dictionary among the wreckage, I'll prove it."

"Oh, I'm sure." he chuckled. "Terrifying."

He gave her a warm smile, sneaking a glance at her eyes. He wanting to stare for just a little longer, and then glanced away. "It's....my pleasure. Well, not my pleasure about everything you've gone through, and....uh....I just....anytime you need to talk. I'll be listening."
"And qat is a real word. If we find a dictionary among the wreckage, I'll prove it."
"So is 'rutting'. I'll prove it."

She stifled a chuckle at his obvious discomfort, but then nodded in understanding. It was good to know there was someone to listen.
"So is 'rutting'. I'll prove it."
"Uh, no, I don't think curse words from short-lived sci-fi series are considered legal in the realm of Scrabble," she countered, trying to retrace the path back through the trees. "But then again, who's willing to say Joss Whedon is wrong?"
