The crash site where the mid-section of the plane, or fuselage, is located, as well as the area surrounding the fuselage. Location found in box G3 below: Each box is 3 miles by 3 miles. It takes an hour to walk 3 miles. But also keep in mind that hiking (like that really steep hill to get to higher ground) will take a heck of a lot longer and that if you're running (like from some jungle thing), that you'll get somewhere faster.

Sayid was standing at the shore, with the transciever in his hand again. During the night, he had gotten the radio component of it completely operational. Now, it was a matter of getting a signal. He tweaked with the radio's reception, a loud crackling sound emitting from the speakers as Sayid tuned it up and down it's frequency. He frowned, looking at the small display screen. It didn't seem to be picking up anything again, no matter where on the beach he was. At least, not yet. One could see his footprints left in the wet sand, where he had been pacing up and down the beach earlier, trying to get a signal, any kind of signal he could find, but he had had no luck so far. He continued to tweak with the radio, still hopeful he could pick up something he could use to send a call for help.

KATE
Kate hadn't built herself a shelter yet the day before, prefering to sleep in the open. After spending time being confined since the marshal had found her, the thought of sleeping in a tent wasn't appealing. She'd had two whole days in the wide open space and felt much better for it; free again.
She'd woken up at sunrise and had decided it was as good a time as any to build herself a shelter. Most everyone had still been asleep and she managed to keep pretty quiet. Staying unnoticed was her specialty after all. After having finished that, she'd headed down to the water and had washed the dirt off herself and her clothes as best she could. When she finished, she walked along the shore drying her hair with a small towel she'd found while quietly observing the camp and the people until her eyes came to rest on Sayid.
She made her way up to him and noticed the tracks on the ground which revealed that he'd been pacing for some time now. "So I'm not the only early riser," she said smiling. She watched him fiddle with the dials on the transceiver. "Is it working?"

Sayid turned to see the woman who had given him the transciever from the other day, stopping his tweaking with the radio. He turned to her and smiled softly, looking back at the transciever.
"So it seems." he said to her earlier comment, "The more time I have to spend on this transciever, the quicker we can leave this place. Sleep is not an option."
He listened to her further, weighing the thought in his mind and considering what to say to her, as he wasn't exactly sure if it was working until he got any reception. "Seems to be, except we're not picking up a signal." he replied finally, checking the transciever again as it emitted a loud buzz of static, and turned down the volume drastically so he could hear what she had to say to him.

She looked around her. It was definitely a very beautiful place. If not for that thing knocking down trees, she would have easily decided to stay here rather than be locked up. Live here on the island having to avoid or run from that thing or spend the rest of her life contained in a cell? It was a toss-up.
Her gaze returned to him when he talked about picking up a signal. "You're trying to pick up a signal?" she asked rhetorically. "But aren't we supposed to be trying to send one?

Sayid waited patiently until he had her attention again, noticing she was glancing around. He didn't give any thought to it, and pointed to the small LCD display screen on the radio when she asked about the signal.
"Yes," he paused, trying to explain for her clarity, "...but what you want to see here is little bars. Bars would show the radio's getting reception."

She looked to where he was pointing on the screen and sure enough, there were no bars which meant no reception. "So we need bars." She looked back up at him. "How can we get them?"

Sayid thought of the options, and in light of it, started to doubt if he had been wasting time and the battery of the transciever in his attempts. "We could broadcast blind, hope that someone, maybe a ship somewhere picks up our distress call." That is what he had been doing for the past hour, but with little result. "But that would be a waste of the battery. It might not last for long."
Suddenly, as he glanced past Kate at the scenery of the island behind her, an idea began to develop in his head. "There is one thing we could try."

She waited for his reply but her curiosity soon outweighted her patience. He seemed to have gotten lost in thought. "And what's that?"

Sayid broke out of thought and looked at her simply. It was such an obvious idea, he didn't know why he hadn't thought of it before - until he remembered the large, unknown creature that had been moving around in the jungle from the night before. But still, the ends was still worth the means. "Seeing if we could get a signal from high ground."

She was afraid to ask but she did anyway. "How high are we talking?" She hoped the answer would simply be to climb one of the nearby trees, but she had a feeling that's not exactly what he meant.

Sayid didn't feel he needed to answer. He looked up past her, giving a nod once with his head to indicate the landscape of the mountain on the island past her. That is what he had in mind. Turning the transciever off to save the batteries, he waited for her to voice her thoughts before putting his plan into action. She was the one who had brought the transciever to him after all the trouble she, Charlie and the doctor had gone through to get it, and he felt obligated that he would work together with her to get a signal up and running on the transciever - if they could get through the jungle safely to higher ground, that is.

She started to look up in the direction he nodded, shielding the glare of the sun with her hand, her eyes following the mountain up, up, up. Finally she looked back to Sayid. "Okay. So when do we leave?"

Sayid cliped the transciever onto his belt, and turned to her. "Today, if possible; the sooner, the better. If we leave now, we should be able to reach the top of that peak by about noon, before the worst of the heat from the sun gets to us. How much time do you think you'll need to prepare? We'll need to take enough water to last the trip."

"Not long at all. I just need to grab my backpack and some bottles of water." As an afterthought, she added, "And I should let Jack know."

"Good. Let's leave in, say, five minutes." Sayid offered as he turned to leave, but then turned back at the mention of a name, trying to remember who it had been mentioned towards before. "Yes, you should let Jack know. He is the doctor, is he not?"

WALTER
The old man walked around, glancing at the various people. He looked at the burnt Fuselage, and shook his head, sad that it had come to this. He looked around at some of the kids that were running around this camp. Not a lot of people his age made it, it seemed. Not a lot of young kids, the ones that were the age ofhis grandkids, around either. He looked at the fuselage again, realizing that no one had seen the signal fire. Help wasn't coming, he concluded. He was going to have to make this island work for him for a while.

"Five minutes, I can do that. I'll meet you right back here." She started to walk away when he asked another question and she turned back to answer. "Yes, Jack's the doctor." She gave him one more smile and headed out to find Jack.

Kate came rushing up. She'd taken much longer than the 5 minutes she said it would take, due to the fact that several people had approached and she'd had to repeatedly say where they were headed. On her way back, she'd run by her shelter, grabbed her backpack, and threw some bottles of water in.
"Sorry," she said as she ran up to Sayid. "I kept getting held up. We have another person joining us."
