HURLEY
"It's not my business. Not my problem."
Hurley nodded, not believing a word of it. From the time they'd arrived, Jack had been Mr. Fix-it. Helping everyone in the aftermath of the crash, hiking to get the transceiver. If anyone had a problem, he seemed to want to be there to solve it. So...what was different about the Kate situation?
"Yeah, you're right," Hurley agreed, not exactly eager to point out the flaw in Jack's plan of looking the other way. "We'll just let Johnny Fever take care of her when he gets better."

JACK
He took a deep breath as he stared at the marshal's body. "He's not getting better if we don't get some stronger antibiotics," he admitted. Jack hated failing a patient, but Jack knew the odds of the marshal living were slim to none.

"But...all that stuff I got from the luggage--" he began, in an attempt at encouragement.

JACK
He shook his head in anoyance, Jack wasn't anoyed by Hurley, but by the fact that there was almost nothing Jack could do for the marshal unless he got better medicine, "It's for ear infections and foot fungus."

"What about those who are over on the other side of the beach? I saw them gathering some luggage earlier," Jack stated hoping Hurley hadn't gone through it yet.

He nodded. "Yeah, that flight attendant chick and some other people," he answered. "I think they were helpin' Sayid find stuff."

"Alright, I'll head over there, see if I can find anything," Jack said, "Why don't you keep an eye on him?" Jack said pointing to the marshal.

"Great. Yeah, I'd love to. On it," he said quickly, not relishing the thought of going through more dead people's things.

JACK
He grabbed a cloth and wiped the sand off his hands. He stuffed the cloth into his back pocket and made his way out.

KATE
***enters from Sawyer's Shelter***
Kate paused a ways away from the tent to look around. Good, nobody was looking. She headed to the opening, looking around as she did so.

HURLEY
His feelings of uselessness continued to grow with every pained sigh and groan from the man left lying in Jack's tent. How long was the doc gonna' be gone? What could he do in the meantime? Water. Patients always needed water, right? He gathered some of the empty water bottles and used a piece of wreckage to slice off the top, to make it easier to drink from them.
Collecting an armful, he decided to head to one of those tarps that Sayid and the others had been working on to see if maybe there was some fresh water there. And a few steps from the shelter, he found himself staring at the woman from the mug shot, right there in living color. He froze in silence.

KATE
She stopped short, resisting the reflex to almost attack and run at being taking so off guard as she almost crashed into a guy. A very big guy with curly hair that women would be jealous over. "Hey, sorry," she said with a friendly smile. She held out her hand. "I don't think we've met yet. I'm Kate." She needed an excuse for coming here and fast. "I'm looking for Jack and I thought he might be in there," she said, nodding toward the shelter.

HURLEY
"Oh, hi...Kate," he said, shaking her hand and repeating her name without any emotion or total abject fear. "I'm Hurley. I was gonna get some more water," he explained. "And uh, Jack went to go get some medicine. Over there." He nodded toward the stack of luggage that people had been sorting through.

KATE
Kate turned to look in the direction Hurley had nodded, unaware that that gun tucked in the back of her jeans was visible. She didn't even remember it being there as she had so many times had a gun tucked hidden away. "Where, in the fuselage?" she asked. She turned back to Hurley, wondering slightly about him. He was definitely interesting and seemed a bit on edge. She wasn't being hostile or short with him. If so, she could have changed her tone a bit to make him more at ease. The only other thing she could think of was that perhaps he wasn't good at talking to women and there wasn't exactly anything she could do about that.

HURLEY
When she turned, he noticed the black shape at her waist and suddenly realized it was a gun. The woman from the mug shot, the escaped fugitive, this Kate that the wounded man kept insisting was dangerous...was now packing heat?! He felt a sudden need to be elsewhere.
"What? Yeah. Yeah, in the, uh...uh..." he stammered, not making eye contact with the armed felon. "You know, I got to go get that water." He rushed past her and off in the direction of the fuselage.

KATE
She watched Hurley rush away. Instead of standing there wasting time trying to figure out what had gotten into him, she took a quick look around, making sure nobody was watching, then slipped into the tent.
Kate knelt down beside Edward and watched him. He was not looking good. So pale and lifeless. She moved closer, trying to find signs of life, almost afraid that he was dead but the very slight rise and fall of his chest proved otherwise. she could hear thunder and lightening outside. A storm was coming in and fast.

US MARSHALL EDWARD MARS
His fingers twitched. Thunder rumbled above him, somewhere. High.
So much pain, and sleep was the only relief. But it couldn't last, and his eyes snapped open.
Delirious, he saw her. That angel's face that hid such a dangerous individual. The face that had talked her way out of so many situations. Always slipping through his grasp. Playing their little game, which would've been fun if it weren't for all the people she'd killed and lives she'd ruined along the way.
He reached out with surprising speed, suppressing the pain that ripped through him as his fingers closed around her throat tightly.

KATE
Kate barely held back a scream of surprise when his eyes snapped open so suddenly. Before she had time to register anything, his hands had shot out and he had a surprising grip around her neck. Now Kate couldn't scream, though she wanted to. She fought for breath as she clawed at his hands, her eyes open wide in fear and surprise. She tried pulling away from his grasp but it only resulted in her falling backward. His hold did not loosen. Instead, he fell with her, pinning her underneath him. She couldn't move, couldn't yell out for help.
With one hand still trying to pry at Edward's fingers, she reached around her for something but her hands found nothing. She couldn't even reach the tent flat to yank at it to try and get someone's attention. She was starting to see spots dancing in front of her eyes as she used both hands again to try and loosen the death grip but she was starting to feel weak.
There were so many times during the years of cat and mouse they'd played that Kate had gotten the feeling that if he could just get his hands on her, he'd love nothing more than to throttle her. But back in the real world where laws existed, he'd held himself in check. Here on this island, there were no laws. The one place she had a shot at starting over was the one place he could get away with squeezing the life out of her. He was not long for this world, she knew that, and because of it, she'd thought she'd won their game. Kate felt her hope for a tabula rasa fading away as he was slowly becoming the victor.

JACK
***Jack enters from G3 - Area of Survivors Camp***
Jack seemed saunter along the beach. It was almost as if the rain didn't bother him, which it really didn't. Jack was only about eight feet away from his tent that he felt as if he had just struck a brick wall, and a brick wall on an island seemed a bit obscure. Jack paused, standing motionless. His eyes closed. It was as if he were wishing away everything that surrounded him, wishing away all the recent events. Not just the plane crash, but Kate's mugshot, the marshal that was near death, his torn back which seemed to throb with pain, leading all the way back to his father's death and even further, but in his mind Jack knew it was to late to change some things.
He eyes pried open as he could hear what sounded like a muffled cry for help. Jack looked around, as he was unsure of where the sound was coming from. With the rain now clouding Jack's vision, Jack now found himself blindly spinning out of control in the darkness. He heard the sound again, and made his way to his tent. He opened the flap that covered what would be assumed as the entrance. He Jack rushing into his tent, froze is shock as he stared at Kate being strangled by the marshal. Jack stopped to try to piece things together, but it was only a split second later that he realized that that information was not needed, and that he would have to act quickly.
He tried pulling the two apart, without physically hurting either Kate or the marshal. "Damn it! Let her go damn it!" Jack pried the marshal's hands off and forced him back down onto the blankets. Jack checked the marshal and realized that he was no longer breathing. "Breath! Come on! Come on, come on. Look at me, look." Jack turned to Kate, "What did you do?"
