He simply stood, perfectly still, unmoved. "I'm not a liar, Juliet." he insisted firmly, watching her carefully.

"I'm not a liar, Juliet."
She paused to inhale deeply and compose herself before turning back to face him. He'd promised to cure Rachel, and it seemed he had done so. But her resolve to get off this island and return to her family was still present. If anything, it was even stronger now that she knew Rachel and her son were safe.
She stepped closer to him. "I wanna go home, Ben," she requested sadly, her voice free from any of the animosity or belligerence she'd shown the day before.

"I wanna go home, Ben,"
He shook his head, as if denying a child candy. "That's not our agreement," he began in a subtlety patronizing tone. "You need to stay here until your work is finished."

"You need to stay here until your work is finished."
"But it's impossible," she countered. "The mothers keep dying." Everything they'd tried for months, for years, had failed to reverse the problem that pregnant women seemed to have on this island. If solving an unidentified and unfixable problem was the condition of her freedom, then she would never be able to go home. She had to make him see reason.

"The mothers keep dying."
That was wrong. Failure was something he wasn't about to accept. They were coming close, he could feel it. And for success, certain prices had to be paid. "Then we'll find more mothers." he replied with a firm conviction. "Who knows, maybe there's even one on that plane."

"Then we'll find more mothers...Who knows, maybe there's even one on that plane."
She shook her head in disbelief. So Ben already had a plan for whomever survived the plane crash. A renewed purpose and hope, despite the tumor on his spine. And a new reason to keep her there against her will. She felt angry and sad and helpless. But she wouldn't give him the pleasure of seeing her cry.
Without another word, she retrieved her book from the table and headed outside. Blinking back tears, she looked up at the still brilliantly blue sky and prayed that this Flight 815 would bring her redemption, salvation, even a way home. "I'm coming, Rachel," she said softly. "I swear I'll find a way."

MIKHAIL
Mikhail waited until Juliet had left his little abode in the jungle. He looked to the door- to make sure she was really gone- then looked back to Benjamin.
He leaned back in his seat and said, with a lop-sided grin, "Well, that went rather well, didn't it?"

"Well, that went rather well, didn't it?"
"Exceptionally." he replied in a deadpan tone, casting a stony look at Mikhail, before heading outside to find Juliet.
He didn't go up to her straight away. He stood close to the flame station. "I wasn't lying, was I, Juliet?" he said, and then suddenly realized the surreal scene before him. A beautiful blonde woman standing near a structure that housed a one-eyed Russia, and he was trying to ignore the cows that shifted around nearby.

"I wasn't lying, was I, Juliet?"
"No," she said softly. "No, apparently you've been honest and upfront about one thing in the entire three years that I've been here." She turned to face him. "Am I supposed to be grateful now? To thank you profusely for this wonderful opportunity to be stranded so far away from my family, with no hope of returning to them for the foreseeable future?"

"Not at all. You're simply meant to understand that you have something to work to-wards." he said, approaching.

She huffed and looked away. "So my sister is merely a carrot on a string to be dangled in front of me? You couldn't care less about how I feel," she declared.
"The chances that anyone survived that plane crash are slim at best. The chances that any of those survivors might be pregnant are even slimmer. And then we have the more immediate problem of the tumor on your spine. Something which you assured me was impossible to develop here on this island. So forgive me if I don't share your optimism."

He felt a mild sting at the mention of his tumour. The sickness inside of him. He quickly recomposed himself, not allowing any emotion to show on his face. "I'm not entirely sure 'optimism' is the right word. But I do have faith there are survivors, even if chances are low that there's a new mother among them. But we're going to find out for ourselves rather than leaving it to guesswork and then just going home, aren't we?"

"But we're going to find out for ourselves rather than leaving it to guesswork and then just going home, aren't we?"
She crossed her arms and pulled herself up to her full height, which was quite a few inches taller than Ben. "I suppose I don't really have a choice, do I?" she said flatly.
