Tom walked up to Ben's front door and knocked gently.

He reached the door, opening it. "Tom? Good, please come in."

FRIENDLY
"How did it go with Jules?" Tom asked as he stepped in to the house.

"As expected. Lots of kicking and screaming. But she'll comply." he said simply.

FRIENDLY "Good," Tom said, with nod. "The tail is closer than we thought at first. We can make a pre-emptitive strike tonight and get some of the threats out of the way."

"The tail is closer than we thought at first. We can make a pre-emptitive strike tonight and get some of the threats out of the way."
He sat down behind his desk. He sighed deeply, barely listening to Tom. Too many things were happening at once.
He glanced at the bookmarked copy of Carrie on the desk, and gritted his teeth a little. He looked back up at Tom. "Well, I suppose you'd better start with that strike, then. Get to the Flame first and stock up. Cause as little disturbance as possible when you reach their camp, I don't want you to return with tales of blood and glory."
He realized he shouldn't be so snippy with Tom. He'd done nothing wrong, and was perfectly loyal. But everything just weighed down on him. All the responsibility and situations.

"Alright," he said. "If you don't mind, I'm going to have Pickett lead the team. This seems like more his cup of tea anyway."
Tom expected Ben to be all on board, but he also knew that being hated drained a lot out of Ben. His dad had a lot to do with that, he assumed.
"We'll be back before Sunrise."

"We'll be back before Sunrise."
"Make sure of that." he said as Tom left. Once he was gone, Ben fell silent for a moment, looking down and concentrating on his fingers.
Juliet was filled with nothing but hate for him. His own fault, of course. But he so didn't want her to hate him. Too many people did that. Why did it have to be Jules, as well?
But then, he did deserve to be hated. Everything he'd done. His hands stained with the blood of so many. Some, like his father, he didn't regret. Some he did. His mother...Horace...
He looked over at the copy of Carrie. On the cover, a woman bathed in red, her arms spread in an almost Christ-like position. With a sudden burst of anger, he seized the book and shoved it violently into his desk drawer before burying his head in his hands.

It would be time, soon. For many of them to leave for Hydra island with those they'd taken and begin the...well, begin the tests to see if they were compatible.
Today, he'd make a point of talking to Preston Saint. A nice boy. Well-educated. A little odd. And not pulling his weight. Ben had tolerated it, but Saint would no longer get away with it. Not with the current circumstances.
Ben sank his teeth into a chunk of breakfast bacon, and glanced over his shoulder at the wall behind him. A seven year old Alexandra Linus looked back at him, encased behind a frame and glass. She'd grown since then, and now when he saw her, all he saw was hate reflected in her eyes. He wondered if his father had seen the same hate.
No, certainly not. Roger hadn't remembered birthdays, let alone look for subtle hints of his sons psyche concealed behind blue eyes.
He loved Alex. She was perhaps the only good thing that came out of all his actions. He'd killed a lot of people, and for his daughter, he would kill a great deal more. Maybe one day she would hate him for all he'd done, even if it was out of love. Maybe one day he'd be in the same position as Roger. Spluttering and jerking about like some grotesque puppet before falling still while his child looked on with bitter rage. And if Alex was happy, he could live with that idea.

Well, it was about time to go talk to Saint. Their resident GP, and he wasn't even where he should've been yesterday.

Ben stared, un-blinking, at the blue-eyed little man in the mirror with the receding hairline. He was buttoning up his blue, striped shirt, and figuring out what he would say. Two were dead. Two of his people, and it did hurt. But it was pointless to think about their deaths. Those deaths had been necessary, and their own fault at the end of the day. They had been weak, and stupid, and so they met their demise.
He couldn't use those words when he spoke to the others, however. He had to continue sending out the illusion that he cared about all of them. After all, Juliet had been completely right. He was a liar.
He lied constantly and consistently, and sometimes he found it hard to tell even the most basic truths that gave him no foreseeable advantage. How he was feeling, what he liked, who he liked. Perhaps it was a left-over habit from years of relative silence, followed by years and years of pretense. Lying to Roger, to Annie, to Horace. Confiding in no one but Richard, and even now he felt...distant from Richard. Father figures tended to lose their appeal when they ended up looking fifteen years younger than you.
He lied to Juliet, and he wished he wouldn't, because he sometimes felt it was important that she liked him. He lied to Tom, and he wished he wouldn't, because he should trust Tom. There was no reason not to. He still lied to Alex, and he was glad he did. He protected her. Lying protected her at times. So did threats, and harm...even murder.
That was why Karl was a concern. He felt no particular dislike for the boy, not at first. But he was stealing his daughter away from him, and on the island, that was very wrong. If Karl got Alex pregnant and doomed, he'd have the boy murdered. He'd do it himself.
He finished buttoning up his shirt, and leaned down on the sink. "What are you going to say to them, Ben?" he asked the mirror. "You'll say something good. Something very good. A very good lie."
