He glanced down at the page. Something--someone was making her want to leave. She wasn't thinking clearly, and he would have to be careful.
Willo's thoughts turned to his childhood. When he was little he, like all kids, I suppose, thought things weren't fair. His mom would calm him down and then she'd look at him in the eyes and say what are you going to do about it?.
He took his pen out of his pocket--the red one that he usually used to mark up scripts. He popped the cap off and wrote on the piece of paper.
Do you want to tell me what happened?

"I just did," she wrote in response, rather petulantly. It wasn't her fault he didn't understand sign language. "There was this guy. I don't know his name, but I've seen him around. I think he knew who I was; he seemed to recognize me. He did the whole let's-vent-to-the-deaf-girl-because-she-can't-hear-it thing, except it was scary. He got all up in my face and menacing. And then he left," she finished succinctly, not really caring to talk about it anymore.

Sorry, he wrote in reply, and, rather than pushing the matter forward dropped it entirely. I'm doing my best to learn the signs... I've got some of them... but it's a process. I guess that's how you feel all the time, like you should be understanding but you just don't.
He looked out to the water then back at her.
I want to get off this island too, he wrote. He thought of his little sister... and... he looked down at the sand. Now wasn't the time to go off on his own problems. Someone had scared Grace to the point of break down. He would find out who soon enough. But this was one of the few things he had some actual skill in, he felt. If it's the last thing I do... I'll get us home. I just have to figure out how.

"I don't feel like I should be understanding. I lost my hearing before I really knew what it was, so I don't even know what I'm hearing. I just want to understand." She gazed pensively at the water again, digging her feet into the sand. So he would get them all home? Nice sentiment, probably not going to happen. "That's sweet, but how can one guy save all these people? No resources or anything, no experience..." She paused, pen still on paper, and thought for a moment. "But I wouldn't know. Hell, for all I know you're a Navy SEAL. You're one of the only people I can talk to on this island, and I know pretty much nothing except your name."

He couldn't help but smile at the idea of him as a SEAL. He had met a couple and... well, they looked way different than he did. Then he realized that he had wrote the wrong word. He meant to say want... he wrote should. It was a mistake he'd easily make while talking... but writing something down? That was not a mistake he made regularly. He shook his head, brushing it off.
I'm no Navy SEAL, he wrote. My mom used to do this thing. When... when I started thinking the world wasn't fair... when it seemed like I was up against it... like... this one day... I was really young... and some older kids beat me up because... well, because they were little kids, right? Anyway... there were three of them and one of me, and I knew that if I told anyone they would just torment me further. But... you know... I tell my mom right? I explain to her why I can't just tattle on the kids... And she calms me down. Then she brushed away my tears from my face and got down on her knees, right in front of my face... and she just looks at me and says 'what are you going to do about it?' And I didn't have an answer for her. They eventually found another kid to pick on and I moved on.... but my mom...
He paused, and looked out to the sea.
Soon enough she was gone. Before she... you know... she left me a note. I still have this note... and she told me to take care of my sister. My little sister. And... at the very bottom...the P.S.... it said... 'Your world just changed because one person left you. And I wish it didn't. But remember, in the end all things in the world are equal. The tears of sorrow you cry today... all the pain you feel... that's how much one person can change the world for another person. Imagine if those tears of sorrow were tears of joy. That is what you will do, my son. And I will be so proud of you.
A lone tear rolled down his cheek as he punctuated the last sentence. He lowered his head for a second and then sighed.
I can tell you all the facts you want about me. Where I was born, what I do for a living, what my favorite color is, why I have an unnatural fear of dogs or why I loathe bendy straws. But you just learned something about me no one else knows.

Little Sarah
"Oh, I would tend to agree. Dr. Arzt could definitely use a kick to the shins," she observed. "But actually, nevermind. I did not say that out loud." Sarah gave a small giggle and wrapped her arms around Gwen's neck.
"Your silly," breaking free she winked and begun to help with the sandcastle.

***Ethan enters***
Seeing Gwen, he flattened his hair as best he could. She was with the little girl, Sarah, and so he decided to rescue her from babysitting duties. He couldn't get rid of the heavy bags under his eyes, the messy facial hair or being hung over, however.
"Morning, Gwendolyn." he stated, walking awkwardly up to Gwen.

"Morning, Gwendolyn."
"Oh, Ethan. Hi," she greeted, getting to her feet again. "I hadn't seen you all morning. Are you feeling alright?"

Grace watched patiently as he wrote, waiting until it was finished so that she wasn't reading it right out of the pen. Would've been like watching over someone's should as they typed. She smiled at the note from his mother, in the typical female reaction of awwww when any man shows a sign of sensitivity. But this was all getting way too serious, which would inevitably lead to brooding and bad temper on her part. "That's beautiful. It really is. I wish I had something like that from my mother. But you still didn't answer my question. How are you going to get us off the island? A bamboo yacht with palm-frond woven sails?" she teased, looking out at the jungle to emphasize just how many palm trees there were.
While looking that way, however, she just happened to spot the guy from the jungle, walking up to none other than Gwen. For a second her smile slipped, but she hastily slapped it back on and kicked her feet a little in the water.

"I hadn't seen you all morning. Are you feeling alright?"
"I don't know. How do I look?" he asked tonelessly, glancing about himself as if afraid someone was sneaking up on him. "I went with some of the cool kids to bring back water. Stumbled across a bee's nest, and now I'm here. Let's just say I don't really believe in leave no man behind."

"Well, you do look as if you stumbled over a bee's nest," she said, with a sympathetic smile. "Do you want me to see if there's anything in Jack's tent for the stings?"

"No, I think the rock star and the producer got the worst of it." he replied, scratching at one of the few stings he recieved. "Bees die after they sting, so I win. In a very minor way."
He looked down at the little girl, and then back up at Gwen."So, what are you doing? Oh, and d'you like the Wisconsin shirt?"

"So, what are you doing? Oh, and d'you like the Wisconsin shirt?"
"Ah, well, Wisconsin is one of my favorite places for a layover," she replied. "I'm just helping Sarah with her sandcastle. Heidi asked me to look after her while she went with the water-gathering group. She didn't get caught in the bee attack, did she?" she asked.

"Not as far as I know." he said with a shrug. He ran a hand back through his hair. "Hey, I spoke to Sawyer last night...I know that's a strange enough occurance, but he also told me you picked up some pain meds from him."

"Yes, I did," she admitted, still feeling uneasy about her deal with the devil. "Severin was seriously injured out in the jungle. Jack did what he could, but he was still in a lot of pain. So I traded my last pack of cigarettes with Sawyer for a bottle of pain pills.
"I know it wasn't the smartest thing to do, and I know that he will find a way to turn this around on me eventually, but I had to do something," she explained.

Didn't mean to get so serious, he wrote, quickly shifting his writing to something else. And I haven't quite figured it out yet. I was born in New England, so I know the basics of sailing... but I wouldn't know the first thing about building a boat. I'll need to thi

Willo stopped. He had been trained to read body language and, while he missed the smile dropping, he had noticed the kicking feet. Movement was a sign of discomfort or unease. He knew who his perp was now.
That's him, isn't it? The guy from the jungle?

"You're right. It wasn't the smartest thing to do." he said, and then decided that he sounded a little cruel. "Although I'm less smart, because I literally traded the shirt off my back to Sawyer."
He looked at her hopefully, as if he was expecting her to congratulate him on not killing Sawyer and actually trading. Maybe give him a treat and tell him he was a good boy.

"So how far inland were the caves? What are they like?"
"They're...actually, they're beautiful natural formations. Not too far in, either. It's not a big walk to get there." Ethan rubbed his left eye, trying for a weak smile at Gwen. "Stream, small waterfall."
